1 Chapter 6 Systems of Linear Equations

2 6.1 Using Graphs and Tables to Solve Systems

3 A system of linear equations in two variables (linear system) consists of two or more linear equations in two variables. y = 2x + 1 y = 4x - 1

4 Solution An ordered pair (a,b) is a solution of the system if it satisfies both equations. The solution set of the system is the set of all solutions/ordered pairs (a,b) The intersection of the linear equations is the only point that satisfies each equation. Three main ways to solve systems: graphing, substitution, and elimination.

5 Solving by graphing: 1) by hand 2) using graphic calc:
By hand: 1) graph each equation by hand 2) find the intersection point visually

6 By calc: 1) graph each equation using y =
2) zoom 6 to display the lines 3) 2nd calc>intersect>first curve>enter> second curve>enter>Guess> enter
