1 Community of Memory and Dwelling
Comm 616 Week#5 Vlog Community of Memory and Dwelling

2 Community of Dwelling According to the text, dwelling is a gathering of community practices and stories that give an organization a sense of uniqueness; separating a specified organization fro others within the same industry (Arnett et al., 2009). Some examples of dwelling would be church. There are many churches within Charlotte; some may say there is a church almost on every corner. However, each one will claim there is something unique that may set them apart from each other. Fast food places like Burger King, McDonald’s, Chick-fil-a are other examples of dwellings. Each establishment advertise their products to be better than the others based upon what the needs of the culture and profitability.

3 Community of Memory Community of memory within organizations is the organization conscience providing a reminder of what has and has not worked. Also, what particular actions continue the communicative life together, shaping a given dwelling place in a particular fashion? In other words, a community of memory lives in the exchange and interplay of saying and what is said. It is not a place of static collection of old stories; it is the central location of active engagement for an organization. Hence, the mission statement is critical for any organization to define who they are and what they said (Arnett et al., 2009). Collectively, each employee must understand the mission in order to unify behind it and make sense of their dwelling.

4 Welcome to Chick-fil-a, how may I serve you!
The following video is a great example of community memory and dwelling. The founder of Chick-fil-a is giving a speech regarding how the company was started and the mission statement. Let’s take a listen. Press play! Mission Statement: “Glorify God, being a faithful steward to all entrusted in our care, to have a positive influence on all that we come in contact with.”

5 What do you stand for? The inability to state what an organization does and why it does what it does announces a communication ethics danger that invites pragmatic communication consequences. Therefore, the primary ethical principle for an organization must be it’s ability to articulate what it does. The founder of Chick-fil-a mentions once they found their purpose they were able to define their business as people ethics since it’s the people who make the business.

6 A community of memory is a collection of past and an engagement with the future.
Rosalyn Collings-Eves expresses such community in her essay titled, “A Recipe for Remembrance: Memory and Identity in African-American Women’s Cookbook”. The aim is to establish how these cookbooks function rhetorically as memory texts: to memorialize both individuals and community, to invoke "memory beyond mind," and to generate a sense of collective memory that in turn shapes communal memory. The author details the collection of African American recipes accumulated throughout the years into three cookbooks. Each recipe has significant meaning throughout African American culture. For example, I can remember my grandmother and great grandmother making chitlings (pig intestines). Although I am not a fan of chitlings, this recipe is a family recipe passed down through generations from slavery. There’s a community of memory that’s tied to food no matter what culture one comes from. Shared memories expressed during seasons. Below is the link to review the journal article further:
