1 Participative Method: Brainstorming Method (Discussion Note)

2 Brainstorming Method Brainstorming method is a process of rapidly generating information about an issue. It is a technique to help learners to think in a creative way. Everyone who responds give the ideas and all are recorded. BKB/NASC/2018

3 After brainstorming, the facilitator and learners agree on relevant ideas and discard irrelevant ones. Topics for brainstorming might include identification of problems/issues and generating solutions or ideas. Within a short period of time , a large number of ideas can be collected using this method. 4 Process Step One Decide the appropriateness of the method.

5 Step Two Prepare specific question/issue/theme/agenda for discussion

6 Step Three Prepare key learning points related to the issues

7 Step Four Clearly define the problem / issues. Ensure that each an every members fully understands it. BKB/NASC/2018

8 Step Five Tell everyone that in the time allocated to the event they all have to come up with solution/s to the problem/issue. The emphasis here should be on quantity, not quality. BKB/NASC/2018

9 Step Six Come back together and let everybody share their ideas. There are some rules which must be strictly followed at this stage: BKB/NASC/2018

10 List the ideas on a flip chart / Board.
No negative comment / remarks are allowed. Building on others’ ideas is okay. The facilitator should ensure that everyone is able to present their idea/s. BKB/NASC/2018

11 Step Seven Debate the ‘menu’ of solutions. BKB/NASC/2018

12 Step Eight Evaluate and priorities them and select the most important ideas. BKB/NASC/2018

13 Step Nine Work further on the ideas / generate the learning points.

14 When to use It should be used when the facilitator wants to build up a useful inventory of an ideas, issues, topics or problems. It should be used when the facilitator wants to solve a complicated problem which requires the participation as well as the consensus. BKB/NASC/2018

15 When not to use It should not be used if the objective of the session is to develop skills. BKB/NASC/2018
