The boxes represent the duration of participation in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) in Los Angeles County. For illustrative purposes, we are assuming that children are born on 1 January of each year. The “old food package” group includes children who turned 5 y old and therefore left WIC before the implementation of the new food package in October Children in the “new food package” group include children born after October Children with a “full WIC dose” are those who participate in WIC consecutively from birth until before their fifth birthday. Children with a “late WIC dose” include children who join WIC in Los Angeles County at age 2-3 y and, since then, participate consecutively until before their fifth birthday. FIGURE 2 Results of the piecewise linear spline mixed models investigating the association between WIC exposure group and growth trajectories for children 0–5 y participating in WIC in Los Angeles County. (A) Gender-stratified comparisons between children in the full-dose, new food package group versus children in the full-dose, old food package group; predicted WHZ means (N = 100,440). (B) Gender-stratified comparisons between children in the late-dose, new food package group versus children in the late-dose, old food package group; predicted WHZ means (N = 10,934). (C) Gender-stratified comparisons between children in the full-dose, new food package group versus children in the late-dose, new food package group; predicted WHZ means (N = 5780).
