Objectives: 1. What causes earthquakes? 2. Describe how energy (from earthquakes) travels through the Earth. 3. What are the important places that are noted in an earthquake?

3 Flipchart: read & do! Tech Terms: p.224-231
earthquake – the shaking and trembling that results from the movement of rock beneath Earth’s surface. Seismology- the study of earthquakes

4 deformation – a change in the shape of a rock in response to stress (force & tension) elastic rebound- the sudden return of elasticity in deformed rock to its original shape (energy release like a rubber band)

5 P Tech Terms to add to flipchart: (independent inquiry) p waves s waves surface waves focus epicenter Define & draw!

6 Tech Terms: Types of earthquake waves: P waves – PRIMARY…these arrive first (movement is like an accordion). S waves - SECONDARY…these arrive second (vibrate side to side and up and down). Surface waves- demo!

7 8. focus – the point beneath Earth’s surface where the earthquake occurs (rock under stress breaks).
