Write down one word that sums up how he feels about London This then meets the first objective – sense of place

relates to the flow or structure of a poem opposite is a short sentence or ‘end-stop’.

Mindmap

12 Match! Can you match up the techniques with their examples?
Star challenge: what is the writer trying to tell us? Metaphor Sibilance (alliteration of ‘s’ sounds) Repetition Juxtaposition (contrast) Onomatopoeia “Sun surfacing defiantly” “Groggily groggily” “Emerald island” “Roar” “Blue”… “grey”

13 Work through these questions in groups then pick your top answer.
Discuss What are sland Man’s feelings about the island? How are these expressed? What are Island Man’s feelings about London? How are these expressed? What place does the man like best? How many years do you think that he has been gone from the island? What does this tell us about his feelings for where he was born? Where does he identify with most? This is his CULTURAL IDENTITY! What I do with my groups, if its any help, is I give them 1 minute to discuss the first question in pairs, then one minute to discuss the question as a group and come up with the best answer. You could do this – just time it on your watch. It ensures that you’ve managed complete discussion for all students

14 Write Write a PEA paragraph answering the following question:
How does Grace Nicols use language to convey feelings about place in the poem?

15 Learning Check Write down anything new that you’ve learnt today!
Pick out the best word or phrase that you think shows how Island Man feels Be ready to feed back You could do the pair share, group share thing here too if you wanted.

16 Get Thunking “No man is an island entirely to himself”
John Donne ( ) How might we relate this famous quotation to Grace Nicols’s poem?
