3 INTRODUCTION Every member of an Organization brings with her/him a range of emotions. Some Emotions have the ability to stimulate organizational performance while other Emotions tend to have a negative impact on performance.

4 DEFINITION Emotions are intense feelings that are directed at someone or something. These are different from moods, which are feelings that tend to be less intense than emotions and that lack a contextual stimulus. Moods are feelings that tend to be less intense than emotions and that lack a contextual stimulus. Emotions are reactions to an object; they are not lasting personality traits. E.g. Happy about something, angry at someone etc.

5 EMOTIONS IN THE WORK PLACE
Research has identified six universal emotions: anger, fear, sadness, happiness, disgust, and surprise. These are referred to as Emotional Continuum.

6 People who know their own emotions and are good at reading others’ emotions may be more effective in their jobs. The entire workplace can be affected by positive or negative workplace emotions. Study found that when leaders were in a positive mood, individual group members experienced better moods, and groups had a more positive tone.

7 EMOTIONAL LABOUR This refers to the requirement that employees express particular emotions at work (for instance, enthusiasm or cheerfulness) to maximize organizational productivity.

8 EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE
Emotional intelligence(EI) refers to an assortment of noncognitive skills, capabilities, and competencies that influence a person’s ability to succeed in coping with environmental demands and pressures. It’s composed of five dimensions: •Self-awareness. Being aware of what you are feeling. •Self-management. The ability to manage your own emotions and impulses. •Self-motivation. The ability to persist in the face of setbacks and failures. •Empathy. The ability to sense how others are feeling. • Social skills. The ability to handle the emotions of others.

9 NEGATIVE EMOTIONS Leads to deviant behavior which violate established norms. Deviant actions fall into categories such as: production (leaving early, intentionally working slowly) property (stealing, sabotage) political (gossiping, blaming co-workers) personal aggression (sexual harassment, verbal abuse).
