5 What is new criticism New Criticism was a formalist movement in literary theory that dominated American literary criticism in the middle decades of the 20th century. Anglo American: The term implies a relationship between the United States and the United Kingdom (specifically England), or the two countries' shared language, English, and/or cultural heritage Focuses on critical attention and literature itself Practical Criticism or close reading Literary text Is treated as a self sufficient verbal artifact

6 What is New Criticism Focus almost exclusively on problems of interpreting individual texts Not merely of literature but of criticism itself Literary criticism which could be readily taught to graduate students Literary form made a wide range of cultural and aesthetic topics available for treatment in shorter critical articles Close attention to language of text and pattern of formal and thematic features No “framework” or ambiguity

7 What is new criticism Reformation of critical reading
Widened the scope of poetic interpretation Radical rethinking is required More general pursuit of theory Uses of language reflect an intrinsic degree of freedom in the production of meaning
