2 Maps and Dictionaries The primary use of map or dictionary is to store elements so that they can be located quickly using keys. The motivation for such searches is that each element stores additional useful information besides the search key, but the only way to get at that information is to use the search key. 3 Maps and Dictionaries Like priority queues, maps and dictionaries store key-value pairs, called entries. Maps require that each key be unique, while dictionaries allow multiple entries to have the same key, just like priority queues. Total order relation is always required for keys in priority queues, it is optional for dictionaries. 5/14/2019 CS210-Summer 2005, Lecture 16

4 The Map ADT A map stores key-value pairs (k, v), which we call entries, where k is the key and v is its corresponding value. The map ADT requires each key be unique. We allow both the keys and the values stored in a map to be of any Object type. 5/14/2019 CS210-Summer 2005, Lecture 16

5 Map ADT size(): Return the number of entries in M.
isEmpty(): Test whether M is empty get(k): if the map has an entry e with key k, then returns the value of e, else returns null put (k, v): if map does not have entry with key k, then inserts the entry (k, v) to M and return null. Otherwise replace with v the existing value of the entry with key k and return the old value. remove(k): remove from M the entry with key k and returns its value. If M has no such entry then return null. keys(): returns an iterator of the keys stored in M. values(): returns an iterator of the values associated with keys stored in M. 5/14/2019 CS210-Summer 2005, Lecture 16

6 Map ADT When get(k), put (k, v) and remove(k) are performed on a map that has no entry with key equal to k, we use the convention of returning null. What is the disadvantage of doing this? 5/14/2019 CS210-Summer 2005, Lecture 16

7 Maps in the java.util.package
java.util package includes an interface for the Map ADT. Interface java.util.Map does not have any methods to directly return iterators of a Maps keys or values, but it does have methods to return a set of keys or values, which can in turn provide an iterator. 5/14/2019 CS210-Summer 2005, Lecture 16

8 A Simple List-Based Map implementation
A simple way of implementing a map is to store its n entries in a list S, implemented as a doubly linked list. get(k), put(k,v) and remove(k), involves simple scan down S looking for an entry with key k. Each of the above methods take O(n) time on a Map with n entries, because each method involves searching through the entire list in the worst case. 5/14/2019 CS210-Summer 2005, Lecture 16

9 Hash Tables The keys associated with values in a map are typically thought of as “addresses” for those values. One of the most efficient ways to implement a map is to use a hash table. A hash table can usually perform operations in O(1) time. Hash table has two major components: Bucket array Hash function 5/14/2019 CS210-Summer 2005, Lecture 16

11 Bucket Array If the keys are integers well distributed in the range [0,N-1], then the entry e with key k is simply inserted into the bucket A[k]. If the keys are unique then each bucket holds at most one entry. Then searches, insertion and removal takes O(1) time. Sounds good. 12 Bucket Array If N is much larger than the number of entries actually present in the map, we have a waste of space. Keys are required to be integers in the range 0 to N-1. We need a good mapping from the keys to the integers. 5/14/2019 CS210-Summer 2005, Lecture 16

13 Hash Functions A hash function h maps keys of a given type to integers in a fixed interval [0, N - 1] Example: h(x) = x mod N is a hash function for integer keys The integer h(x) is called the hash value of key x A hash table for a given key type consists of Hash function h Array (called table) of size N When implementing a map with a hash table, the goal is to store item (k, o) at index i = h(k) 5/14/2019 CS210-Summer 2005, Lecture 16

15 Hash Functions A hash function is usually specified as the composition of two functions: Hash code: h1: keys  integers Compression function: h2: integers  [0, N - 1] The hash code is applied first, and the compression function is applied next on the result, i.e., h(x) = h2(h1(x)) The goal of the hash function is to “disperse” the keys in an apparently random way 5/14/2019 CS210-Summer 2005, Lecture 16

16 Hash Codes Component sum: Memory address: Integer cast:
We partition the bits of the key into components of fixed length (e.g., 16 or 32 bits) and we sum the components (ignoring overflows) Suitable for numeric keys of fixed length greater than or equal to the number of bits of the integer type (e.g., long and double in Java) Memory address: We reinterpret the memory address of the key object as an integer (default hash code of all Java objects) Good in general, except for numeric and string keys Integer cast: We reinterpret the bits of the key as an integer Suitable for keys of length less than or equal to the number of bits of the integer type (e.g., byte, short, int and float in Java) 5/14/2019 CS210-Summer 2005, Lecture 16

17 Hash Codes (cont.) Polynomial accumulation: a0 a1 … an-1
We evaluate the polynomial p(z) = a0 + a1 z + a2 z2 + … … + an-1zn-1 at a fixed value z, ignoring overflows Especially suitable for strings (e.g., the choice z = 33 gives at most 6 collisions on a set of 50,000 English words) 5/14/2019 CS210-Summer 2005, Lecture 16

18 Compression Functions
Division: h2 (y) = y mod N The size N of the hash table is usually chosen to be a prime The reason has to do with number theory and is beyond the scope of this course 5/14/2019 CS210-Summer 2005, Lecture 16

19 Collision Handling Collisions occur when different elements are mapped to the same cell Separate Chaining: let each cell in the table point to a linked list of entries that map there 1 2 3 4 Separate chaining is simple, but requires additional memory outside the table 5/14/2019 CS210-Summer 2005, Lecture 16

21 Linear Probing Example: h(x) = x mod 13

22 Search with Linear Probing
Consider a hash table A that uses linear probing get(k) We start at cell h(k) We probe consecutive locations until one of the following occurs An item with key k is found, or An empty cell is found, or N cells have been unsuccessfully probed Algorithm get(k) i  h(k) p  0 repeat c  A[i] if c =  return null else if c.key () = k return c.element() else i  (i + 1) mod N p  p + 1 until p = N 5/14/2019 CS210-Summer 2005, Lecture 16

23 Updates with Linear Probing
To handle insertions and deletions, we introduce a special object, called AVAILABLE, which replaces deleted elements remove(k) We search for an entry with key k If such an entry (k, o) is found, we replace it with the special item AVAILABLE and we return element o Else, we return null put(k, o) We throw an exception if the table is full We start at cell h(k) We probe consecutive cells until a cell i is found that is either empty or stores AVAILABLE We store entry (k, o) in cell i 5/14/2019 CS210-Summer 2005, Lecture 16

24 Performance of Hashing
In the worst case, searches, insertions and removals on a hash table take O(n) time The worst case occurs when all the keys inserted into the map collide The load factor a = n/N affects the performance of a hash table Assuming that the hash values are like random numbers, it can be shown that the expected number of probes for an insertion with open addressing is 1 / (1 - a) The expected running time of all the dictionary ADT operations in a hash table is O(1) In practice, hashing is very fast provided the load factor is not close to 100% Applications of hash tables: small databases compilers browser caches 5/14/2019 CS210-Summer 2005, Lecture 16
