1. Summer Feeding Program

2. Why is a Summer Feeding Program Necessary?
Nearly 14 million children depend on Free and Reduced school meals for 9 months out of the year. We know that many are at nutritional risk during the summer months. Currently, approximately 2.3 million children participate in the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) each day.

3. How Does the SFSP Work?
Sponsors sign agreements with their State agencies to run the program.
USDA reimburses the sponsor for all meals served to children ages 18 and under that meet Federal nutritional guidelines.

4. What determines where a site may be?
A site must be in a location where at least half of the children in the area are eligible for free and reduced priced meals according to published school data. (Title 1 Schools)

5. Who is eligible to eat at the Summer Feeding sites?
Any child ages 18 and under may eat free at any of the designated Summer Feeding schools.

6. What type of menus will be served in the SFSP?
The menus which will be used for the SFSP are the same menus served during the school year.

7. Where will our SFSP sites be held?
The following 10 schools will serve a hot breakfast and lunch each weekday during the months of June and July. Breakfast will be from 7:30-8: Lunch from 11:00-1:00

10. How did we determine which schools would participate?
Of the 12 schools that will participate in the SFSP, we will be having Summer School in 9 of them.
The following 3 schools were added to the list to make the program more accessible to everyone:
University Place Elementary
McDonnell Elementary
Lakewood Elementary

11. Why are we serving Breakfast and Lunch in 10 schools but only Supper in the other 2 schools?
Dr. Wardynski wanted to provide 3 hot meals a day to all children 18 and under. The USDA only allows 2 meals to be served at the same site, and the meals can NOT be Lunch and Supper. Because of this, we chose to offer Supper at 2 feeder schools which happen to be the 2 Middle Schools that are providing Summer School, (Davis Hills and Westlawn).
Huntsville City Schools will be the only school district in North Alabama to offer 3 FREE hot meals a day to all children ages 18 and under. We may be the ONLY district in the entire state of Alabama.

12. How does the funding for the SFSP compare to the NSLP?
Breakfast for SFSP = $ NSLP = $1.85
Lunch for SFSP= $ NSLP= $2.94
Supper for SFSP= $ NSLP= NA
SFSP funding is higher than the NSLP funding

13. Does the SFSP allow for adults to eat? If so, is there a charge?
Adults are allowed to eat if they are accompanied by a child.
The price for adults to eat breakfast is $2.50.
The price for adults to eat lunch or supper is $4.00.
These are the normal prices charged for visitors during the school year.
