2 Figure 1 Photomicrographs. Top, Low magnification demonstrating a solitary nodule of pulmonary Langerhans cell histiocytosis. The periphery of the nodule shows an irregular interface with the adjacent alveolated lung parenchyma. The central portion of the nodule reveals a combination of inflammation and fibrosis (hematoxylin-eosin, original magnification ×2). Bottom, Higher power shows a combination of inflammation and fibrosis with numerous darkly staining eosinophils and clusters of Langerhans cells with folded nuclei (arrows) (hematoxylin-eosin, original magnification ×200). Inset, These cells were positive for S-100 protein and CD1a (immunoperoxidase for CD1a, original magnification ×400).
