1 Science Activity: Stnd 01 Date Standard 01: 8.PS2.1 Magnetism and Electricity Design and conduct an investigation about magnetism and electricity. Examine factors that increase or diminish the electric current and the magnetic field strength. Key Focus: Science and Engineering Practice(s) Develop and Use Models Key Focus: Crosscutting Concept Recognize cause and effect relationships 1st Investigation: Construct and test an electromagnet 2nd Investigation: Do an electromagnetic induction simulation. 3rd Investigation: Construct and test an electrical motor

2 Electromagnets can be turned on and off as needed
Solenoid Iron Core Source of Electricity Electromagnets can be turned on and off as needed You can adjust the strength of an electromagnet two ways 1) Increase or decrease the electrical current 2) Increase or decrease the number of coils

3 Electromagnets: Three Main Components
(1) Solenoid (2) Iron Core (3) Source of Electricity Identify the 3 Components Identify the 3 Components Identify the 3 Components

4 How do we use electromagnets?
SPI Electromagnets Notes Science How do we use electromagnets? Commonly found in electrical motors and switches Also used to… To lift objects Example: Junkyard crane-magnets Example: Maglev trains To propel objects Example: Railguns as weapons Example: Magnetic catapults (launch platforms) To look inside of people Example: Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

5 How do we use electromagnets?
To lift objects: Example: Junkyard crane-magnets Video Clip: Scrapyard Electromagnet In Action

6 How do we use electromagnets?
To lift objects: Example: Maglev trains (magnetic levitation) Video Clip (show 1st 45 sec): How Maglev Trains Work Maglev Train Maglev Train

7 How do we use electromagnets?
To propel objects: Example: Railguns as weapons Video Clip (stop at 2 min:15 secs): US Navy Railgun Rail Gun Rail Gun

8 How do we use electromagnets?
To propel objects: Magnetic Catapult (for spacecraft) NASA is testing magnetic catapults to replace rockets Magnetic Catapult

9 How do we use electromagnets?
To propel objects: Magnetic catapults (for aircraft) Video Clip (2:46): Aircraft Carrier-Magnetic Catapult

10 How do we use electromagnets?
To Look Inside of People: Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Video Clip: MRI Magnetic Field Strength

11 Construct an Electromagnet Link (2:19): Build an Electromagnet
A) Build an electromagnet after watching the video shown below. B) Use it to pick up a paper clip. Try more than one paper clip. C) Adjust the number or wraps/coils on it. D) Use different sized iron cores. E) Place two batteries in series. Link (2:19): Build an Electromagnet What cause and effect connection do you observe regarding the number of coils and the strength of the magnetic field?
