You MUST complete the pre-lab questions in order to participate in the lab Pay close attention to the instructions This is part of your grade!

8 Homeostasis What does it mean?
The body of a living organism maintaining internal balance even when there are external changes Give the example of our bodies maintaining a constant body temperature

9 Shark Facts Classification: Kingdom= Animal Phylum= Chordata
Class= Chondrichthyes Reproduction: sexual Ovoviviparous= eggs are formed inside mother’s body, hatch inside her body, and are born alive

10 Shark Facts Preys on fish, squid and octopus
Larger sharks are predators

11 Shark Facts Lateral-line system: sensory organ that consists of cells along the sides of the body Detects pressure changes and vibrations Spiracle: special gill slit behind eye, takes oxygen directly to the brain

12 Shark Facts Dogfish sharks move continuously…why do you think they do this? Dogfish sharks have to move continuously so that oxygen-rich water will flow into their gills They have no way to pump the water into their gills

13 Shark Facts Ampullae of lorenzi: sense organs called electroreceptors
Can detect weak electrical signals produced by the muscle movements of other animals Found in pores on the shark’s head

15 Dissection Terms Anterior= front/head Posterior=rear/bottom
Dorsal= near the upper surface, toward the back Ventral=near the bottom, toward the belly Tell kids that these terms help us to understand what directions we’re talking about

Medial= toward the middle Rostral=toward the front Caudal=toward the tail

You should be taking this lab seriously Any misuse of tools or materials will result in serious consequences, this is an issue of safety I am treating you like a mature student, you need to act like one NOT FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS IN ANY WAY, NO MATTER HOW SMALL, WILL RESULT IN YOU NOT PARTICIPATING IN THE DISSECTION MISUSE OR DAMAGING MATERIALS IN ANY WAY WILL RESULT IN A REFERRAL AND DISMISSAL FROM MY CLASS If students think they will not be able to conduct themselves maturely, they will be given the option to do an alternate assignment and sent to another teacher’s room
