1 From Grade 2 Curriculum Document
TWO-APART FACTS From Grade 2 Curriculum Document There are 6 two-apart facts: 3 + 5, 4 + 6, and 5 + 3, 6 + 4, If 1 from the larger of the two numbers is transferred to the smaller, a double is produced; this double is the number between the two given numbers. If students made Unifix towers for the two numbers, they could move one cube from the larger to the smaller and see the resultant double. Some students have trouble with this strategy because both numbers change so they are doubling a number that they don’t actually see in front of them. Another strategy for these facts involves removing 2 from the larger to make a double of the smaller, so the smaller is doubled and the 2 is added back on. Again, if students used Unifix cubes to model this strategy, they would see the double plus 2. There are 6 two-apart facts for subtraction: 8 – 3, 8 – 5, 10 – 4, 10 – 6, 12 – 5, 12 – 7 For subtraction the think addition strategy would be a starting point. For example for the fact 12 – 5, students would double the minuend 5, get 10 and see that 2 more is needed to make the 12, so 12 – 5 is – 7. Think double 7 is 14, I have two too many so 12 – 7 is 5.
