3. What is Scientific Notation?
If we shorten a message, we must do it in a way that is useful, easy to understand or standard/universal. In Science and Mathematics, we often use abbreviations. One way we shorten Science and Math messages is using scientific notation.
What is Scientific Notation?
Scientific notation is a mathematical expression used to represent a decimal number between 1 and 10 multiplied by ten, so you can write large numbers using less digits. 
Examples:
4000 is written as 4 x 10³
54700 is written as 5.47 x 104
9.645 is written as 9645 x 10-3
