2 I. Republican Party Mid 1850’s –People who opposed slavery sought a new voice to take a stand against slavery (not Whig or Democrat) A group of Free-Soilers, Northern Democrats and anti slavery Whigs met in Michigan and formed the Republican party. Main goal was to keep slavery out of the western territory Some wanted to end it in the South , but most wanted to stop its spread

C Republicans chose John C. Fremont to run for President 1. frontiersman, fought for CA. independence 2. Little political experience-opposed slavery D. Democrats ran James Buchanan –”northerner with Southern principles” E. Former President Millard Fillmore ran as a member of the American or “know nothing” party F. James Buchanan won but Republicans made a strong showing with 1/3 of popular vote

4 II Abe Lincoln A. Served in Illinois state legislature and in Congress. B. Opposed to Kansas-Nebraska Act, decided to run for Senate C Illinois Senate race, Lincoln challenges Stephen Douglas

D. Lincoln –Douglas Debates 1. The two debated 7 times. Slavery became a big topic of the debates a. Douglas disliked slavery but wanted the issue settled through popular sovereignty . Stated that he didn’t care how the territories voted. b. Lincoln believed that slavery was wrong. He was against slavery in the territories. He did not wish to interfere with slavery where it already existed 2. Lincoln became more well known, but, Douglas won the election by a slim margin 3. Two years later they would both run for President

6 III. John Brown’s raid 1859-led a group of followers including 5 African Americans to Harper’s Ferry, VA Planned to raid a federal arsenal (gun warehouse). Wanted to arm slaves and lead them in a revolt He and raiders quickly got control of arsenal. No uprising occurred. Brown was captured At his trial, He was found guilty of murder and treason and sentenced to death (hung) Brown was considered a hero and a martyr by many Northerners. Southerners felt the North wanted to destroy slavery and the South
