Jazz 1940 to 1960 Good morning! Today we will learn a little about JAZZ music from 1940 to 1960….. Jazz Presented by Noel Davis

2 What are the key elements of Jazz music?
Improvisation Swing Rhythm Self-Expression Improvisation is what made Jazz music so unique from the rest of the music at the time. Improvisation is the most defining feature of jazz. Improvisation is creating, or making up, music as you go along. Swing Rhythm- Instead of a staying in a structured rhythmic pattern, like a hymn, the rhythm would be stretched and bent. Self-Expression-

3 Characteristics of Bebop:
Scatting Fast tempo Listening Audience Lengthy Improvisation Long Solos Began in early 1940s Scatting is singing strung nonsense syllables together rhythmically in music. Bebop was for an audience that would be sitting down, enjoying dinner while it was played…not for dancing. Lots and lots of improvisation….What is that again? Each instrument in a Bebop combo or quintet would typically have a long solo during each piece.

4 Dizzy Gillespie Innovator of the “Bebop” jazz style Jazz trumpeter
Prominent band leader of the day

One legend of how scat began tells of how Calloway forgot the words to a song during a performance and started improvising nonsense syllables to fit with the beat of the music. 7 Cool Jazz Late 1940s to early 1950s Characteristics of Cool Jazz:
Relaxed tempos Lighter tone Elements of classical music “It was an ethereal, drifting cloud music that used French horns as well as regular jazz instruments, highly wrought arrangements and rich tone colors, through which the soloists played in a measured, walking-on- eggshells manner.” - John Fordham lXec76w&feature=related Cool Jazz Late 1940s to early 1950s Lets listen to the video clip to hear how cool jazz compares to “Bebop”…..What did you hear that was different? Did you like it better? Why or why not?

8 Artists Chet Baker, trumpeter & vocalist
Miles Davis, trumpeter & bandleader Art Pepper, saxophonist Lennie Tristano, pianist Chris Connor, vocalist These are just a few Cool Jazz Artists…..vocalist/singer Chris Connor was known for her pure sound and fluid tone.

9 How to Scat…. There are several legends on how scatting started…some say jazz musicians would accidentally drop their music during performances so they just made up words as they went along, which is improvising. Scatting was also about self-expression and emotions. Write out nonsense syllables. Say, “Repeat after me” ….do a few examples.. Now, if you were happy, how would you scat that emotion? Mad? Sad? Upset? Do Artists do this today? What kind of artists use scatting?
