3 Cyberbullying - What is it?
Deliberate, repeated harm inflicted through the use of cell phones, internet, and other technology Includes: Sending repeated, mean messages through social media / other Rumors spread on websites for others to see Repeatedly sending threatening and intimidating messages or engaging in other online activities that make a person afraid for his or her safety Kristina

4 Statistics 58 percent of teen internet and cell phone users say their parents have been the biggest influence on what they think is appropriate or inappropriate when using the internet or a cell phone (Lenhart et al., 2011). Only 1 in 10 targets of cyberbullying report telling their parents about the issue (No Bullying, 2016). Kristina

5 Myth or Fact? I’m bullied at school, so I should stay offline to avoid being attacked online. MYTH: While staying offline completely could protect you from online bullying, it’s not necessarily a healthy solution to the problem. You should be able to enjoy online socializing like everyone else. Fatima

6 Myth or Fact? I’ll never get caught bullying someone online. The internet is so big, they’ll never find me. MYTH: While it is possible to be anonymous online, it is very easy to determine where messages originate on the Web, right down to the geographical position of a cell phone. Modern computer and Web forensics can retrieve very detailed information about the origin of online messages. Therefore, there really is no such thing as anonymous. Fatima

7 Myth or Fact? Online bullying is not as harmful as other types of bullying MYTH : Online bullying is just as, is not more, harmful than other types of bullying. Unlike face-to-face harassment, messages sent over the web can stay in cyberspace forever and haunt the victim for years. Cyber bullying has even been linked to teen suicide…. It’s VERY harmful. Fatima

8 How can I support? Know that you’re lucky if your child asks for help
Work with your child Respond thoughtfully, not fast More than one perspective needed What victims say helps most is to be heard Solutions are more important than punishment The ultimate goal is restored self-respect One positive outcome we don’t think about (or hear in the news) enough is resilience Gina

9 Advice for Teens Know that it is not your fault
Don’t respond or retaliate Save the evidence Tell the person to stop Reach out for help Use available tech tools Protect your accounts If someone is being bullied, take action Whether you’re online, in the hallway, in the cafeteria, or on the bus… If you’re a bystander, you have POWER Stand up for the target and get them help…. Report it! Gina
