3. “New Imperialism”
Imperialism is the extension of a nations’ power over lands.
This was not a new idea but it changed in the 1900s
European countries had been content with setting up trading post and some missionary activities.
“New Imperialism” is now these countries wanted nothing but directed control over vast territories for economic reason, political power, racial superiority, and moral responsibility to civilize primitive people.

4. Colonial Takeover in Southeast Asia
Great Britain’s Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles founded Singapore, which was a major stopping point for traffic going to and from China.
Great Britain also controlled Burma to protect their possession in India.
France operated within Vietnam and forced Vietnam under French protectorate. Vietnam and Burma where close to each other which caused tension between France and Britain.

5. A protectorate is a political unit that depends on another government for protection.
Thailand was the exception. Thailand sits between Burma and Vietnam and it acted like a buffer between the two countries.
This was possible because of two kings in Thailand: King Mongkut and his son King Chulaonghorn, both promoted western learning and relationships with European Powers.
The United States took control over the Philippines, which gave the U.S. a stopping point in the Pacific Ocean between China and the main land.

7. Indirect and Direct Rule
Indirect Rule is when local rulers, or elites, were allowed to maintain in power but follow the home countries political agenda.
Countries would use this when they could achieve their goals with local leaders.
Indirect Rule is cheaper and more convenient; however, it is not always possible.
Direct Rule is where the home country removes the local leader and brings in an official to run the colonies.

8. Resistance to Colonial Rule
Many people who were under control of an European Country were not happy with it. This lead to resistance.
There were 3 major forms of resistance:
Resistance from the ruling class
Peasant Revolt
Westernized middle class began to demand independence.
