1 LECTURE 9.4 – EQUILIBRIUM

2 What is equilibrium?

3 Today’s Learning Targets
LT 8.6 – I can describe what equilibrium is and relate it to rates of the forward and reverse reactions.

4 I. Equilibrium Reactions can go in both directions
Equilibrium – Established when the rate of forward reaction equal the rate of the reverse reaction. Therefore, while the reaction continues to occur, the concentration of products and reactants does not change.

5 II. Equilibrium Expression
2HgO (s) ⇌ 2Hg (l) + O2 (g) Equilibrium Arrow

6 III. Dynamic Equilibrium
Reactions do not stop when equilibrium is achieved. The rate of the forward and reverse reaction are equal, but still occurring. This is dynamic equilibrium where the reaction is still occurring, but equilibrium is maintained.
