JACKSON TRIUMPHS 1828Revamped Democratic party Committees and conventions formed; if you broke with party, kicked out! Professional politics was born! Jackson, while in office, replaced government workers with Democratic activists

JACKSON TRIUMPHS This was known as the SPOILS SYSTEM A person could gain a political job because of their political loyalty!! NOT A GOOD THING!

Many Natives still remained in this South despite territory loss. Nations like the Cherokee and Creeks became ASSIMILATED Use your partners and other resources to come up with a definition of that word!

When Georgia went after Indian land, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the Indians Deemed it UNCONSTITUTIONAL Treaties signed by the federal government need to be upheld Jackson stated, “John Marshall has made his decision, now let him enforce it!”

1830Jackson already had Congress pass the INDIAN REMOVAL ACT Peaceful exchange of Indian lands in the South for new lands in Indian Territory in Oklahoma

Most Choctaws and Chickasaws agreed The Creeks did not and were FORCIBLY moved by the US military! Same with the Seminoles in Florida

1838Federal troops forced more than Cherokees to travel to OK 4000 Cherokees died of disease, exposure and hunger This is known as the TRAIL of TEARS

SCANDULOUS!!!!!! It’s seems more complicated than it really is…here is the deal Jackson’s VP opposed a HUGE new tax that the government placed on IMPORTED goods (John C. Calhoun was the VP’s name)

Calhoun began to think that STATES could nullify, or VOID, or law they felt unconstitutional What can of worms could that open up? Jackson put in the new tariff anyway; didn’t scare him Calhoun resigned! South Carolina voted to NULLIFY the tariff and threatened to break away from the US

23 ECONOMIC WOES THE WHIG PARTY FORMS 1832Supporters of the bank formed the WHIG PARTY Believed strong federal government should run the economy State and private banks printed paper money without regulation…no value!

24 ECONOMIC WOES POLITICS AFTER JACKSON 1836Martin Van Buren elected
Panic of 1837nation’s worst ECONOMIC DEPRESSION Land values/sales dropped Banks/businesses closed down Farmers lost land; employees cut wages Whigs managed to get William Henry Harrison elected president; but he died a month later John Tyler became president and carried on much of Jackson’s legacy!
