1 1980 Eruption of Mt. Saint Helens

2 The Eruption When Mt.Saint Helens erupted it blew the entire north face off its mountain. The ash cloud kept coming down for 3 weeks. There was a landslide that devastated a nearby river and many animals’ habitats.

3 Deaths & Damage 57 people were killed by the mountain eruption.
Many people were injured as well. 27.5 billion dollars of damage was caused.

4 The Aftermath Millions of plants and animals were killed due to the falling ash and lava. After the 1980 eruption, people became afraid of the power behind Mt. St. Helens and the entire cascade range. A great deal of damage was done to the environment in and around Washington.

5 Ash Effects In some areas, there was up to 120 ft of ash.
Airplanes were warned to stay clear of the area, because of the falling ash and poor visibility. 1 ash cloud was 175 miles wide.

6 Additional Factors Many people refused to leave there homes which risked many rescue workers lives. It caused a 4.1 magnitude earthquake. There was a large amount of CO2 released into the atmosphere, which caused difficulty in breathing for some local people.
