2 How to divide and work the territory with students
Important things to do before students arrive in the field: When inviting student leaders to lead a team, the publishing director must settle with them the city where the team will work. This needs to happen at least 6 months in advance, but at times it may happen even one year in advance or more (example: when the canvassing work during a vacation period is over). This will help the leaders to recruit the students on campus Upon arrival of the team leaders in the field / Conference (or even before) the publishing director must give them two printed copies of the map of the city where the team will work

3 How to divide and work the territory with students
Important things to do before students arrive in the field: It can be advantageous for the team leaders to visit the city the student will canvass, before dividing the territory. In the event leaders cannot visit the city before the students arrive, they must do it on the very same day of arrival (or in the worst case in the first day after arrival). This way, the students will not loose time waiting for the territory to be assigned

4 How to divide and work the territory with students
Tips in how to divide the territory The leader should find two avenues / streets that cross the center of the city and could be identified as downtown. These two streets will serve to divide the city in four (4) big areas

7 How to divide and work the territory with students
Tips in how to divide the territory After dividing the city in four big areas, the leader should continue to divide the city tracing parallel lines to the right and to the left, above and below (of those two initial lines) to create the other areas / territories like the map below

11 How to divide and work the territory with students
Recommendations regarding the division of the territory: When the city has big avenues crossing downtown and they are not straight, the division of the territory could follow them instead of being just straight lines Dividing the downtown area in four areas will be advantageous and will benefit more students

12 How to divide and work the territory with students
Recommendations regarding the division of the territory: The territory in which each student will canvass should not be disclosed ahead of time, but only after the team arrives in the city. This will avoid negative comments and problems There are some important aspects regarding the territory and the aptitude and experience of each student that need to be taken into consideration when dividing the territory

13 How to divide and work the territory with students
Recommendations regarding the division of the territory: The leader should divide / assign the territory without consulting the students and asking their preference. The process should not happen based on friendships (one student assigned to work with his best friend, for example), but based on aptitudes and experience of each member of the team After distributing all the areas of the territory to the students, the leader should keep 3-4 areas in reserve to be available for the students that finish working in their areas or as an option for the ones that may be facing challenges in their areas

14 How to divide and work the territory with students
Regarding the work of two and two: One more experienced student LE should be appointed to canvass with a less experienced student LE “Canvassers should be sent out two and two. Inexperienced workers should be sent out with those of more experience, who can give them help. They can converse together and study the word of life together, praying with and for each other. Thus, both the younger and the elder Christian will receive the blessing of God.” (E. G. White, Colporteur Ministry p. 58)

15 How to divide and work the territory with students
Recommendations regarding the distribution of the territory: Student LEs who are beginners should always start in residential areas more in the outskirts of town More experienced students can work in downtown, in public offices, banks and commercial areas Less experienced students can work in mixed territories - residential areas mixed with businesses

16 How to divide and work the territory with students
Recommendations regarding the distribution of the territory: One area of the territory should be assigned to two students: one will canvass the odd numbers (one side of the street) while the other will canvass the even numbers (the other side of the street) When working in big cities (especially downtown) or in public offices, and in areas of many commercial buildings, one student can canvass in the odd floors of the buildings while the other will canvass in the even floors

17 How to divide and work the territory with students
Regarding the work of two and two: When working two and two, students can go to their place of work and come back together and support and help each other. As far as security is concerned (especially for girls) having them sharing the same territory is also a plus. New student canvassers should also go two and two. After they get more experience, then they can go in separate ways. They can also go two and two when one is discouraged or when is being more successful so they may help each other to succeed

18 How to divide and work the territory with students
Regarding the work of two and two: At the end of the day before going back to the lodging facility, the “student pair” should get together to agree where they would start to canvass in the next day. This will avoid losing time in the next day When a “student pair” finishes canvassing in their area too fast, the leader can ask them to switch sides: the one who canvassed in the odd numbers will work on the even numbers and vice-versa. Before assigning a new area to a “student pair” that is asking for more territory, the leader should go out with the students involved to verify if the students have worked the previous assigned territory properly

19 How to divide and work the territory with students
The leader canvassing with the students The leader must go out to canvass with the students for three main reasons: To give the example of hard working; 2- To motivate the team; 3- To improve the sales techniques of the students Each work day the leader must leave the lodging facility to go canvassing along with the students. He / she should lock the door of the lodging facility and not leave any student behind

20 How to divide and work the territory with students
The leader canvassing with the students To influence and help as many students as possible the leader should canvass with one student in the morning and another one in the afternoon The leader should prepare a schedule with the names of all students of his team and the day he / she is going out to canvass with them. This schedule can be disclosed ahead of time or not, at the discretion of each leader

21 How to divide and work the territory with students
The leader canvassing with the students When going out to canvass with the students, the leader must let them know upfront until what time they will work together. Many times, the leader needs to take care of other responsibilities (inventory counting and control, placing orders of materials, accounting and money deposits and control, etc.) and because of that he / she will need to quit earlier.

22 How to divide and work the territory with students
The leader canvassing with the students In the evenings, it´s recommended for the leader to return to the lodging facility before everyone. This way, he / she can take a shower, organize things and be ready to receive the students as they come back from work When going out to canvass with the students, the leader must have two goals: 1- Detect possible weaknesses in the sales presentation of the students so they can improve it and be more successful; 2- Motivate and sell for them

23 How to divide and work the territory with students
The leader canvassing with the students After listening to the sales presentation of a student and before visiting the next customer, the leader should make a short evaluation of the sales presentation highlighting the positive aspects and the ones to be improved The leader then should make the next presentation to demonstrate how to do the work in a more professional way. That´s why it´s important to choose leaders who had positive experiences and success as student LEs

24 How to divide and work the territory with students
The leader canvassing with the students When canvassing with students, most sales presentations must be given by the leader. Students will appreciate not only the sales, but also to rest while “the boss” is doing the work Leaders must always pray with students when going out to work with them; when visiting certain customers and whenever an opportunity arises; it´s very important to foster a spiritual atmosphere among the students and at work and the leader is responsible for that

25 How to divide and work the territory with students
Final remarks:

26 How to divide and work the territory with students
Final remarks: Wise leaders know how to place the right LEs in the right place at the right time Balanced leaders do not play favoritism. They work and support all students of their team in a fair and Christian way Experienced leaders develop the potential of students to their maximum potential. They know how to motivate and train them so some can become specialized in working in segments (banks, public offices, barracks, etc.) while others can learn other sales methods
