Felt that the British had pushed them too far Soldiers/Redcoats acted rudely and sometimes even violently Soldiers are paid poorly and got second jobs, taking jobs from townspeople

3 The Boston Massacre March 5, 1770 Boston Massacre takes place
Crowd starts throwing stones, snowballs, oyster shells, and pieces of wood at soldiers and screamed at them Soldier knocked down and shots fired 5 Colonist Killed Crispus Attucks is killed—first African American killed

4 The Word Spreads Propaganda---information designed to influence opinion Samuel Adams puts posters up describing the event as the “Boston Massacre” Engraving by Paul Revere strengthens anti-British feeling Many colonist called for stronger boycotts on British goods. Committee of correspondence helps bring people from other colonies together to oppose British measures Townshend Act repealed except tea on tax

6 A Crisis Over Tea Tea Act of 1773 —Gave the East India Company the right to ship tea to the colonies without paying most of the usual taxes. It also allowed the company to bypass the colonial merchants and sell its tea directly to shopkeepers at a low price. Colonial demands—Ships forced to turn back to Great Britain except in Boston.
