8 Capital punishment Intro:
Capital punishment is a punishment that takes away the life of the criminal. It is also called execution or the death penalty. Capital punishment has not been used in the UK since 1970.

9 Capital punishment Non- religious arguments in favour of capital punishment: If people know that committing murder will lead to their execution, they will not murder If murderers are executed, they are no longer a threat to society The only punishment to fit the crime of taking a life is to take the murderer’s life

10 Capital punishment Non-religious arguments against capital punishment
Courts do convict innocent people and nothing can be done to release an innocent person who has been executed Statistics show that countries that do not use the death penalty have a lower murder rate than those that do Murderers do not expect to be caught when they commit their murders Murderers sometimes try to commit suicide when they are serving life imprisonment, so prison must be a worse sentence than death

11 Capital punishment We have of course many more reasons:
Economical reasons: it is cheaper to kill than maintain in prison Pseudo-religious reasons: God wants it this way!!! Etc…..

12 Capital punishment Now watch the extract making sure you understand the views of the people involved: jailors, condemned, victim’s family, condemned’s family…etc Film
