1 CITATION MS. SZILAGE

2 Citations In text citation Works Cited Cite your source Bibliography
Sources MLA Format

3 Citations Why do we need text citations?
We can’t steal the work of others. It’s called plagiarism. You can get a zero, suspended, expelled from college, sued, or even fined/jail for this crime as you get older. But sometimes, someone else said it better...SO we give credit to the source.

4 Citations: How to do it... Find something in the text that is worth including in your piece of writing. There are 3 ways to use a source: Start with the quote Start with the source Put in your own word

5 Start with the quote Open Quotation marks
Exact words from text including spelling, capitalization and punctuation (even if there is a quote within your quote**) Comma Close Quotation marks Space Open Parenthesis Source # or Author’s last name, optional Page or Paragraph # Close Parenthesis Period

6 So what does that look like?
It’s clear that reading is important. “Reading is linked to a higher salary,” (Source 2). “Students who wear uniforms are twice as likely to get an A on the test,” (Jonesworth). That’s why school uniforms should be used at our school.

7 2. Start with the source... According to Source or Author Comma Space
Open quote Exact words Period End quote

8 Start with the source... According to Source 1, “The best defense is a good offense.” Jonesworth wrote, “Books are like a vacation to anywhere.”

9 3. In your own words... The text:
Your own words: Source 3 stated that the most rare type of eclipse is the total solar. The moon will block the sun from view of the Earth. The word THAT signals you will be telling what the source said but in your own words. Be sure to mention the source or author.

10 Write the sentences with correct punctuation.
Plato Academy Largo is the best campus Source 1 Szilage stated that we are her favorite students According to Donnelly, Olympians are the best

11 **Quote within a quote For now, it’s okay to just use it as though you copy pasted with two sets of double quotes. The proper way is that the quote within the quote gets single quotation marks. In the book, “John said, ‘It’s fun,’ when I asked him,” (Source 1). Source 1 Blah blah blah. John said, “It’s fun.” Yadda yadda yadda.

12 Your turn to practice... Open Google Classroom: Citation Practice
