2 How Do We Understand Place?
Key Idea 2.a: People see, experience and understand place in different ways and this can change over time. Learning Objective: To explore how globalisation and time-space compression can influence a sense of place.

3 What message do you think this image is trying to convey?

4 Task 1 Task 2 In pairs, number yourself 1 & 2.
The Big Question: Is our world getting smaller? Number 1’s: think of arguments to support this view. Number 2’s: think of arguments to challenge this view. You have 5 minutes!!! Task 2 Consider the following questions. What were the barriers to transport and communication? How have transport and communication changed over time? How have developments in transport and communication impacted people? (think of both positives and negatives). How has current technology influenced time-space compression and why?

5 Task 3 Read resource 3 and summarise it in 5 bullet points.
What do you think came first, globalisation or time-space compression?

6 What effect does time-space compression have on the world?
Some might argue that it is time-space compression that has facilitated the process of globalisation. Alternatively, others may argue that without globalisation forces in the first place then the technologies to create time-space compression would not exist. Whichever you agree with there is no doubt that globalisation and time and space being compressed have changed our world and the way we understand places.

7 Homework: ‘You never truly understand a place until you have heard someone else’s perception of it’. Discuss. What do you think about this statement? • Is it true? • Why? Why not? • What evidence have you used to support your answer?
