Intertropical Convergence Zone

Contents Definition Formation Weather Conditions Impact

What is ITCZ? The Intertropical Convergence Zone is the area encircling Earth near the Equator, where the northeast and southeast trade winds converge.

How is ITCZ formed? In the Northern Hemisphere, the trade winds move in a south westward direction, while in the Southern Hemisphere they move north westward from the southeast. When the ITCZ is positioned North or South of the equator, these directions change which brings about unstable weather conditions. Photo by NOAA / Public domain

ITCZ Weather conditions
ITCZ generates vigorous thunderstorms and cumulus and cumulonimbus clouds. Heavy rainfall and strong winds. When ITCZ lies close to the equator, the direction of the wind changes. ITCZ moves from Tropic of Cancer to Tropic of Capricorn along with the sun’s movement.

The impacts of ITCZ This will bring wet weather. At the same time places to the north of the ITCZ will be experiencing hot dry weather, under the influence of the CT winds. Thunderstorms regularly occur directly beneath the ITCZ. Variation in the location of the ITCZ dramatically affects rainfall in many equatorial nations, resulting in the wet and dry seasons of the tropics.
