Overview I will be presenting on behalf of the coastal Fisheries Tuvalu an overview picture depicting the activities that were carried out during Pictures tell a thousand words and you could clearly tell by the pictures that we had a pretty busy year this year.

National Priorities The Guiding vision of the Department: Bountiful inshore fisheries supporting livelihoods and providing local food Sustainable oceanic fisheries providing strong revenue and satisfying jobs The Department’s Mission: To maximize social and economic returns to the people of Tuvalu through the sustainable management and wise use of Tuvalu’s living marine resources. As per requested, Tuvalu consists of two main priorities in its mandated program. However as shown here in this slide it clearly shows that the coastal fisheries will be only focusing in achieving the highlighted vision which states ‘Bountiful inshore fisheries supporting livelihoods and providing local food.

Coastal Division Outer island Management- 3 staff Funafuti Coastal Management- 2 staff Resource Assessment and Monitoring- 4 Staff The coastal division consists of a total of 10 staff, we have the most staff within the different sectors in the fisheries department however there is a great need to add to our arsenal more staff to cover all the areas of coastal fisheries issues currently faced in Tuvalu.

Current Activities Outer Island Management: Work in close collaboration with outer island communities in coastal fisheries related issues: Coordinate Outer island Metronome Trips Outer Island Data collection Program with CREEL SURVEY Formulate Fisheries management plans for each Islands Public awareness programs through Schools and Fishermen Associations Assist in any Fisheries related activities on each Outer Island Metronome trips Activities 2018 Type Executed 3 Metronome Trips Management Plans, collate info for island profiles, CFP monitoring and boat and canoe survey, creel, LMMA & FADS All islands Outer Island DC Data entering and data analysis 5 Outer Island visits Quarterly monitoring As mentioned that the coastal division consists of three different sub-sections, hence the three key issues as per requested will be focused on the three key activities that different coastal sub-sections are concentrated on. The first of the three sub-sections within the coastal fisheries is the Outer Island coastal management. This particular sub-section concentrates on resolving coastal fisheries issues on all outer islands.

Current activities Funafuti Coastal Management: Work in close collaboration with the community of Funafuti in terms of Fisheries related issues: Coordinate Creel Survey on Funafuti with Funafuti DC Monitor FRFSP, Develop FRFSP action plan regular consultations with stakeholders- Kaupule, R2R, PROP, Environment Provide Support to the FCA Public awareness Work closely with in-line projects- R2R, PROP, NAPA 2 Activities 2018 Type Executed Formulate Action plan FRFSP Funafuti Demarcated new boundary for FCA FCA support Waste management program FCA Support Tree planting School Field Trip to FCA Procured boundary indicators Coral planting Beche der mere and giant clam survey The second of the three sub-section is the Funafuti coastal management, why Funafuti island was separated from the rest of the other islands? Funafuti is the capital of Tuvalu and 68% of Tuvalu’s total population. Hence the capital is prone to many Fisheries related issue.
