1 4/5 May 2009 The Palazzo dei Congressi di Stresa Stresa, Italy
Using the GEOSS Common Infrastructure in the Air Quality & Health SBA: Wildfire & Smoke Assessment Prepared by the GEOSS AIP-2 Air Quality & Health Working Group 4/5 May 2009 The Palazzo dei Congressi di Stresa Stresa, Italy

2 Air Quality & Health Scenario
Scenario Overview The AQ Scenario envisions integration of multiple types of AQ data… satellite observations of AQ and meteorology in-situ, ambient observations models of meteorology and chemical transport other: emissions data, fire observations, LIDAR, etc. …being registered, discovered and accessed via GEOSS and used to inform diverse decision-makers: Air Quality Managers, Policy-Makers, and the Public. Scenario is community-developed and community-evolved Challenges Persistent, standardized AQ data network Interface to GEOSS Common Infrastructure: Community Catalog, Portal Implementing scenarios which can integrate the offerings using GCI-compatible Service Oriented Architecture 2

3 Air Quality & Health Applications

4 Wildfire & Smoke Scenario
Test and evaluate GEOSS architecture with a focused scenario Find and use fire location, air pollution observation, and smoke model forecast data to assess air quality impacts of a wildfire event Focus on the 2007 Southern California Fires

5 Publish Service Metadata
Scenario Standards Components: Provider – User – Broker Actions: Register– Discover - access Service Broker Service Broker Find Services Get Access Key Publish Service Metadata The GEOSS Information Systems operates through The AQ community has adopted the standard data access service interface for all datasets and follows the service oriented publish-find-bind approach. Service User Access Service Provider Service providers register service metadata to a service broker. Service users find the needed service and get access key from a service broker With the access key, users bind to the service provider The result is a dynamic binding mechanism between the service users and providers

8 1: Register data services
Key message: Simplify the process for air quality data providers to use the GEOSS Common Infrastructure

9 Deploy OGC W*S Service Service Broker Service User WCS/WMS Servers
GetCapabilities Service User WCS/WMS Servers WMS Validator Dataset A data provider deploys a standards based data service. Make smaller - First condition is that all of air quality datasets are standards based data access with wms and wcs Creating AQ ISO records can be made semi-automatically starting with WMS or WCS get capabilities and other ISO records using the metadata editor Additionally, client applications can create ISO records by using the AQ ISO Schema to translate their dataset records into ISO records. Once the metadata has been created, it is saved into the Community Catalog Web Accessible Folder. 3 sets of standards does interoperability.

10 Discover GEOSS Community Components
A data service provider searches the GCI for air quality community resources to help with GEOSS registration and finds the GEOSS AQ Community Catalog and GEOSS AQ Community Portal

11 Create and Register Metadata

13 Service Broker Harvest Service Service User Provider ISO 19115
GEOSS Clearinghouse(s) Community Catalog ISO 19115 The Community Catalog, GEOSS registry and GEOSS Clearinghouse make up the service broker. The Community Catalogs are registered in the GEOSS registry the clearinghouse searches the registry to find catalogs and then harvests the catalogs for the service metadata records Service User Service Provider

15 2: Search and find data services and tools
Key message: Standard metadata and search interfaces allow multiple tools to find air quality data from a common metadata pool
