4 NSBE In a Nutshell To increase the number of culturally responsible Black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally and positively impact the community Focus is to provide programs and services to students and families who are life-long learners and critical thinkers. To achieve excellence in education for ALL African American students enabling them to successfully participate in and contribute their 21st Century skill set and knowledge to a global society.

5 NSBE History NSBE was founded in 1975 at Purdue University by African-American engineering students Developed to help retention rates of Black college students in successfully complete college education in STEM and serve as positive role models and contributors to their community The goal is to encourage communication among our ranks to ensure that we as a people are able to continue the success we have in STEM

6 10,000 As A Number As a number, 10,000 holds a lot of weight
What are some things that could be represented by the number 10,000?

7 What is the 10,000 Goal By 2025, the goal is to have 10, ________ graduates in ________ fields Where does this number come from? Which group contributes the most to this goal?

8 NSBE Jr. and the 10,000 Goal Membership Numbers: Collegiate: 993
These are the numbers that need to increase to see the goal reached This begs the question

9 Who Should We Target? Collegiate Members or NSBE Jr. Members?
Should we focus more on members who have the potential to grow into STEM degrees, or focus on finishing up students close to their degrees?

10 The Answer? The answer truly is both, but our priority should lie in NSBE Jr. Their numbers and their retention directly targets the issue at hand Focus on NSBE Jr. is considered an upstream solution verses a downstream solution like Collegiate NSBE focus

11 What Steps Should Be Taken?
One of the largest issues in NSBE Jr. retention lies in the difficulty and lack of adequate support into pursuing STEM as a degree What specific roles can NSBE Leadership take in tackling the retention of NSBE Jr? What support systems can individuals provide to see a rise in NSBE Jr. numbers to tackle 10,000?

12 Proactiveness It is critical to tackle this issue with constant effort. Without a proactive approach, we will continue to solve only downstream issues, and never tackling the main roadblock to our success

13 Steps To Take Action COMMUNICATION!!! Discussion with other members
Divide and Conquer Approach Teamwork makes the dream work
