2 Tone Tone is the author’s attitude towards the topic, subject, audience, or character Tone is shown through Dialogue & Descriptions (of character) Tone is determined by analyzing the WORD-CHOICES Tone can be: Positive Neutral Negative

3 Words that can describe Mood:
MOOD is the feeling the reader gets form a story (Mood = ME) Mood varies from reader to reader and can be positive, neutral, or negative Mood is created & shown through the: Setting Atmosphere Words that can describe Mood: Light-hearted Violent Playful Cold Liberating Confusing Welcoming Threatening Tender Painful Warm Terrifying Peaceful Lonely Idyllic Joyous Inclusive Restricting Tense Sad Gloomy Overwhelmed

4 Tone: Lamb to the slaughter
In “Lamb to the Slaughter” Roald Dahl’s tone towards women is ironic. The room was warm, the curtains were closed, the two table lamps were lit […] Mary Maloney was waiting for her husband to come home from work. Now and again she glanced at the clock, but without anxiety” (Dahl 1). This is a very CALM scene where it appears nothing wrong could happen “She fell into Jack Noonan’s arms, crying uncontrollably” (Dahl 3). This makes her appear weak (reliance on men) “It’s probably right under our noses” (Dahl 4). Dramatic irony -- the men were so unassuming of how powerful women can be “And in the other room, Mary Maloney began to laugh” (Dahl 4). Women have much more power than the men had assumed & it’s kind of comical they didn’t get it.
