1 Point of View Author’s Purpose Theme
Mrs. J. Schenkel Language Arts 7

2 Stories are told by someone.
The Point of View is the perspective (the eyes) through which the audience perceives (sees) the story.

3 Understanding Narrator
The Narrator is the story teller. This is not the same as the writer (author). The Narrator has a certain persona: a personality, opinions, or attitudes that can influence what is said and how it is said

4 1st Person Point of View The narrator is a character in the story • The narrator uses “I” • The narrator can be a direct observer, or a secondary witness

5 3rd Person Point of View Omniscient
• With third person POV, the story is not told by a character in the story; they are omniscient Omniscient means all knowing Example: Charlotte’s Web, Harry Potter series

6 3rd Person Point of View Omniscient Narrator – can enter the minds of
any character and knows everything Limited Omniscient Narrator – can enter the mind of one character and usually can see what that character sees Objective View (dramatic view) – does not enter the characters’ minds

7 Theme What exactly is this elusive thing called theme?
The theme of a fable is its moral. The theme of a parable is its teaching. The theme of a piece of fiction is its view about life and how people behave. In fiction, the theme is not intended to teach or preach. In fact, it is not presented directly at all. You extract it From the characters, action, and setting that make up the story. In other words, you must figure out the theme yourself.

8 Theme con’t The writer's task is to communicate on a common ground with the reader. Although the particulars of your experience may be different from the details of the story, the general underlying truths behind the story may be just the connection that both you and the writer are seeking.

9 Author’s Purpose To persuade To inform To entertain
In order to effectively evaluate a passage, it is essential to determine the author's purpose. There are three main purposes to an author's passage: To persuade To inform To entertain

10 Author’s Purpose is like a P.I.E.:
to PERSUADE- to convince the reader of a certain point of view to INFORM: to teach or give information to the reader to ENTERTAIN- to hold the attention of the reader through enjoyment
