2 Figure 1 Serum sodium concentration over time. Serum sodium level was 122 mEq/L on admission following presentation to the emergency department for persistent jaundice. Initially fluid restriction and diuresis with furosemide was attempted. Given the lack of response, lactated Ringer’s solution was given after 24 hours. Sodium level decreased even more, to 116 mEq/L, and a hypertonic saline solution infusion was started, with a transient increase in serum sodium level.
