2 THERMAWRAP® What is Thermawrap®? A simple draping system to prevent patient heat loss Combined polyethylene film with particulate aluminium on a polyester fleece backing Easy to use and inexpensive.

4 How does Thermawrap® work?
The polyethylene minimises convective heat loss from all areas covered Convective heat loss can account for up to 33% of patient heat loss during surgery The aluminium controls radiant heat loss from all areas covered Radiant heat loss can account for 50% of patient heat loss during surgery The polyester fleece backing provides a comfortable non-slip surface to allow draping.

Remember the following: the polyethylene (PE) film minimises convective heat loss it insulates the patient. the particulate aluminium (within the PE matrix) prevents radiant heat loss it reflects heat back to the patient.

8 Why prevent hypothermia?
THERMAWRAP® Why prevent hypothermia? “hypothermia” is one of the most serious issues facing both the surgical and anaesthetic team when treating their patients Most hypothermia is ‘mild’ and can be associated with patient heat loss from exposure to ambient room temperature and from delivery of un-warmed fluid during surgery Malignant hypothermia is more commonly associated with patient cooling resulting from ‘shock’ from drugs.

Patients who suffer intra-operative hypothermia can also suffer postoperative cardio-pulmonary stress Reducing the risk of intra-operative hypothermia reduces the risk of post-operative infection and promotes faster wound healing All patients should be protected from the pain and serious side effects of hypothermia There is considerable expense in treating hypothermic patients.

THERMAWRAP® Other Complications of Hypothermia Post-operative shivering associated with increased metabolic rates Fluctuating blood pressure in response to the drugs delivered to the patient Difficulty with vascular access due to vasoconstriction Poor drug delivery due to vasoconstriction Decreased blood pressure as the patient warms and his blood vessels dilate (known as vaso-dilation) Inaccurate SaO2 readings (pulse oximetry) caused by vasoconstriction in body extremities (fingers, toes).

Thermawrap® should be placed over the Bair Hugger warming blanket where it will reflect heat back towards the patient Can we use Thermawrap® during surgery? Yes. Thermawrap® is non-conductive and radiolucent making It safe for use with diathermy and all x-ray equipment.

We know patients begin losing body heat pre- operatively, therefore Thermawrap® is most effective when placed before anaesthesia induction or preferably in the hospital ward Which side goes toward the patient? Either way. However, if the fleece side is towards the patient it is more comfortable for the patient and will drape better.

THERMAWRAP® Frequently Asked Questions Are some body areas more important to cover than others? Some parts of the body lose a disproportionate amount of heat The head is more vascular and loses more heat than the arm Body extremities, such as arms and legs are less vascular than the head but will still be vaso-constricted This has implications for pulse oximetry and vascular access For these areas, head covers, leggings and hand covers are available.

Simply cover as much of the patient as possible, before the patient has started to cool down Keep as much of the patient covered as possible during surgery There are no contraindications for using Thermawrap® and it is safe for use with ALL patients and ALL procedures.

Designed to be durable enough to last from induction through surgery and on to recovery For infection control it is unwise to reuse the drapes on a second patient - this is reflected in the pricing.

THERMAWRAP® How you should introduce the product …. Thermawrap® prevents heat loss It is safe for all patients and all procedures It is not an active system with all the training and maintenance costs. There are no capital equipment costs It is very effective and relatively inexpensive If I can have a trial order I will come and do some training with the nursing staff.

23 How to sell Thermawrap® Five Step Process
Introduce Thermawrap® with a short and simple presentation/ demonstration Take a pulse oximeter mitt and ask the customer to try it on while you are talking to them.

24 THERMAWRAP® Step 2 – Product Trial Be an active part of the trial; encourage them to cover all possible body areas Ask that tympanic temperature measurements are recorded, before the drapes are applied and at regular intervals during use Talk to and coach all staff especially those in PACU who will be responsible for managing hypothermic patients Being there means the trial takes place in a controlled manner.
