11 Connection Questions Asks readers to talk about things the book reminded them of – experiences they’ve had, other things they have read or seen, things that are going on in the wider world. Does it remind you of anything in your life?

12 Analysis Questions Asks the reader to think about and analyze the characters, theme, figurative language, structure, or genre of the book. Character Theme Figurative Language Structure & Genre

13 Analysis Examples Character: Was there a defining moment for the main character? Theme: What overall message do you believe the author was trying to convey Figurative language: What kinds of details and figurative language did the author include to help you experience the book? Structure & Genre: Is this book typical or atypical for the genre.

14 Book Club Procedures Clear your desk except for your book, your questions, and something to write with. Turn your desks and arrange your chairs so that everyone is included in the group. Greet each other! Everyone answers the icebreaker question. Everyone answers the following question: What did you think of the book?

15 Book Club Procedures Choose someone to go first. That person asks one of his/her questions--the most interesting, not necessarily the first! Everyone in the group takes turns responding to the question. If the asker has something to say, he/she should go last.

16 Book Club Procedures When everyone has had a chance to respond, then the next person in the group asks a question. Repeat the same procedure. Be sure that everyone in the group has had a chance to ask a question before the first person goes again.

17 Book Club Procedures It is okay to keep talking about the same question for a long time. Your goal is not to get through the questions--your goal is to have a discussion about the book.

18 Book Club Question Practice this question with your group members:
What genre & subgenre is your book? Does it consist of the usual characteristics of that genre?

19 When you participate in discussion:
Eye Contact- make sure you look up when you speak. Body Language- sit up straight and do not fidget. Volume- speak up so everyone can hear you , but don’t yell. Giving wait time- it is important to let people think about the question that you posed.

20 When you participate in discussion:
Balance of participation- do not take up the entire conversation. Actively listening- engaging in the conversation do not just sit back in your chair and doodle. Showing respect for differences- not everyone will see the same and that is okay.

21 When you participate in discussion:
Asking follow up questions- keep going, don’t just let a subject lie. Prepared questions- have prepared questions when you come to the discussion. Insightful responses- do not just say yes or no really think about your answers.
