1 Subject-Verb Agreement – Compound Subjects

2 The SUBJECT of a sentence or clause is the noun or pronoun that answers the question WHO? or WHAT? before the verb. Example: The cat chased the balloon. (The verb is CHASED) WHO or WHAT chased? The cat If the subject of a sentence is singular, the verb must also be singular. If the subject of a sentence is plural, the verb must also be plural.

3 What Is a Compound Subject
What Is a Compound Subject? A compound subject consists of two or more simple subjects (nouns or pronouns) that share a verb or verb phrase. These subjects are joined by a conjunction such as and, or, or nor. For example: Jack and Jill went up the hill.  Red or green is usually used to decorate for Christmas.

4 Two subjects joined by AND take a plural verb!
Examples: George Lucas and Steven Spielberg make movies. Rhythm and imagery help poets express their feelings.

5 Exception…Compound subjects that name only one person, thing, or place take a singular verb.
Examples: My pen pal and best friend is my cousin. Macaroni and cheese is my favorite dish.

6 Subjects joined by OR or NOR …are tricky!
If both subjects are singular, the verb should also be singular. If both subjects are plural, the verb should also be plural. However, if one subject is plural and the other singular, the verb should agree with the subject closest to it. Jack or Judy is the best choice for class president. Hamburgers or hotdogs are easy to make for outdoor parties. Neither the children nor the their mother was ready for the trip. Neither the mother nor her children were ready for the trip.
