3. 1a. The Protestant Reformation was religious movement that protested many of the beliefs of the Catholic Church. This was a religious movement that ended up with a group of people breaking away from the Catholic Church and calling themselves Protestants. It spread through most of Europe, starting in small German towns. It was led by Martin Luther. 1b. The printing press spread the ideas of the Protestant Reformation. It was also important in printing mass copies of the Bible. 1c. Martin Luther protested the Catholic Church because he felt that it was too wealthy and that it abused its power. He also thought that God meant for religion to be simple. 2a. The first European to search for the Northwest Passage was John Cabot. However, he never found it because it didn’t exist. 2b. The Dutch explorer that looked for the Northwest Passage was Henry Hudson. The French explorers were Jacques Cartier and Giovanni da Verrazano. 3a. The first English settlement, Roanoke, found life very hard. They fought with Native Americans and had a hard time finding food. Eventually, it mysteriously disappeared. 3b. The French – successful with Indians, traded and learned from them English – started the first colony in North America and were not defeated by the Spanish
