1 Welcome to the Maths department
Year 7 Partnership evening 2018

2 Mastery in Maths We have identified 3 key skills in Maths; fluency, reasoning and problem solving. Each lesson will focus on these three skills, with specific questions focussed on each area. The aim if for all students to gain a deeper understanding of each topic. The mastery curriculum will run from Year 7 until Year 9. In Year 10 they will start their GCSE course.

6 Examples of the 3 key skills
Fluency Reasoning Problem solving State the size of the digit 8 in the following: a) 218,000 b) 34,581 c) 8,000,000 Write the number 6472 in words. Write fifteen thousand four hundred and sixty two in figures. Michael says, ‘Using the digits 0 to 9 we can write any number, no matter how large or small.’ Do you agree? Explain your reasoning. Lucy thinks that is bigger than 1.43 because it has more digits. Is she correct? John is given the 4 number cards above, he uses all the cards to make two 2 digit numbers. What could the largest sum of these 2 numbers be?

7 Concrete – Pictorial - Abstract
Tom and Mary share some money in the ratio 3 : 2. Tom gets £12, how much does Mary get? Concrete Pictorial Abstract Tom is 3 parts and £12 One part: 12 ÷ 3 = £4 Mary is 2 parts Mary: 4 x 2 = £8 Mary has £8 Tom is 3 parts so 3x = £12 Therefore x = 4 Mary is 2 parts so 2 x 4 = 8

9 Assessments Students will be assessed at the end of each chapter.
There are 10 chapters throughout the year. Each test is broken down into 3 parts, with separate questions on fluency, reasoning and problem solving. The students will all receive a grade (aspiring, expected, exceptional) for each of the 3 skills.

10 GCSE The students are assessed with three 90 minute exam papers.
In two of these papers a calculator is allowed, one paper is non-calculator. Any of the material covered can be assessed across the three papers.

11 Setting in Maths Students were placed into sets on Monday.
The sets were produced based on KS2 SATS results and from a Midyis test which was taken on their first day at the school. The sets are flexible and will be reviewed regularly throughout the year following assessments. Students are placed in sets to help them make the most progress possible.

12 Equipment We ask that students bring in a protractor, compass, ruler and calculator to all lessons. The calculator we recommend is the Casio fx-83GT PLUS. As two of the GCSE exams are calculator papers, it is important that students get used to their calculator. They are available from the Maths department for £6.55.

13 Homework Students will receive 2 pieces of homework a week.
Some will be set through the SharePoint and be completed in their books. Some will be set on Hegarty Maths.

14 What does a homework on HegartyMaths look like?
Step 1: Video where Mr. Hegarty teaches your child everything they need to know about that topic & goes through all the examples that will be in the quiz. Step 2: Quiz that will allow your child to practise all the examples in the video for themself and know whether they understood what was in the video.
