2 Overview of Learning ๐Ÿ˜ƒ ๐Ÿ˜ ๐Ÿ˜• 1.7 Systems Software
Describe purpose and general functions of system software with examples Name the different types of user interfaces OSโ€™s can have Understand how memory management works and enables multitasking Know what peripheral management is and the role drivers play Evaluate how the OS manages user profiles and keeps systems secure Explain different file types and why they need to be managed Grasp how encryption works and name examples of software that can do it Understand the need for compression and defragmentation Analyse the potential consequences of not backing up data and know the difference between incremental and full backups. Test Results % Grade:

3 Topic 0: Homework Explained
We are trying a new approach to homework, yes another one. This half term your homework will be the following: Each topic in this unit of study is accompanied by a short quiz to test your understanding, this will be done in lessons if there is enough time if not then this will need to be done for homework. These quizzes are linked to in this workbook at the relevant stages. Your ongoing homework will be the very last slide of this workbook which lists all of the keywords for this topic of study, it is expected that as you learn about these words you write a definition in your own words.

4 Topic 1: Operating Systems - User Interfaces

5 Topic 1: Operating Systems - User Interfaces
Look at the following logos of operating systems. Label each box with the name of the operating system.

6 Graphical User Interface
Topic 1: Operating Systems - User Interfaces Vs Command Line Graphical User Interface You need to know correct instructions so difficult to use. Anyone could operate as simple to use.

7 Topic 1: Operating Systems - User Interfaces
Open the Google form linked here and complete the questions on section 1 only! After submitting the form you will be given an instant score, you should use the snipping tool to evidence this below. This will either be done during lesson or set as a piece of homework

8 Topic 2: Features of an OS

9 Features of an Operating System
Description of an operating system: Describe memory management File management is the organisation of data into a useable structure. File Explorer is part of the Windows file management system. List 3 features or things you can do with files using File Explorer. Why is it important for an operating system to manage/control the allocation of memory? What could go wrong if they didnโ€™t? Features of an Operating System What is a โ€œtime sliceโ€? State the purpose of a driver: Why are drivers updated regularly? What is a peripheral? Give 3 examples

10 Operating Systems Extended Research
By completing all of the allocated work for this topic you have demonstrated a good understanding of the content involved. This extended research work will build on this understanding and help develop it even further. You need to start of by reading the section titled โ€œOperating systems deal with user accountsโ€ on page 9 of your revision guide. Then make some notes or any other form of revision material you prefer on the key questions below: What is a user account? What methods do OSโ€™s use to control user accounts? Why do user accounts need to be created? How does having user account help keep data secure? What would be the potential consequences of not having secure user accounts?

11 Operating Systems Extended Research

12 Topic 2: Operating Systems - Features of an OS
Open the Google form linked here and complete the questions on section 2 only! After submitting the form you will be given an instant score, you should use the snipping tool to evidence this below. This will either be done during lesson or set as a piece of homework

13 Topic 3/4: Utility Software

How has the secret key been created?

16 Student Task - Paired Work
Working with a partner you are going to create a Google Slides presentation on the following topics: Defragmentation Software Compression (You covered this before when we looked at binary) Backups Your presentation must be written entirely in your own words, include images/diagrams to help explain things and 2 questions you can ask your audience to check their understanding! This resource is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International License.

17 Student Task - Paired Work
Questions you must cover/answer in your presentation are: What is compression? What is the difference between lossy & lossless compression? Why do we compress files? What is defragmenting? How does defragmenting work? What is the benefit of defragging a HDD? What are the differences between a full/incremental backup of a computer? What are the potential consequences of not backing up? How can you backup a mobile phone? You should attach your finished presentation to Google Classroom System software assignment. Donโ€™t forget you have to include at least 2 questions to ask your audience! This resource is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International License.
