1 Letter to Parent Assignment: pick an issue that you have with your parent or guardian (curfew, watching R rated movies, etc., getting a new phone, getting back your phone after you have had it taken…). Think about what types of appeals you can use: ethos, pathos, logos. Think about what tone you should take. Humorous? Respectful? What will work with your parent? Think about a counterargument? What objections can you anticipate from your parent and how can you address these concerns? Persuasive 8

4 Intro: attention grabber, context, and claim https://www. youtube
Dear John, Imagine us sailing on the exotic winds of the Indian Ocean on the other side of the world. Think about the amazing wonders of both land and sea that await us. Where else in the world can you experience a chance sighting of a giant mola mola in the morning and then a colony of ten-foot Komodo dragons in the afternoon? We are not getting any younger, you and I, so now seems like the perfect time for bold adventure and discovery, for who knows what the future holds? I say we through caution to the wind and travel to Indonesia next summer! Hook Context Claim Questions Anecdote Statistics Quote

5 Set a focus and develop support
Topic sentence: no cliché transitions Details Concluding sentence Concluding Sentence can… 1. Synthesize paragraph (draw a conclusion): Can you picture the exotic beauty of it all? 2. Transition to the next topic: If these land excursions aren’t tempting enough, imagine how world class our diving will be. The land excursions alone will make this trip the experience of a lifetime. We can see the exotic sights of Bali and immerse ourselves in its rich culture and art. We’ll explore the breathtaking landscape of the islands—relax on the white sandy beaches, hike up the volcanic pinnacles, and wander through the dense, lush rain forests. We’ll dare to set foot on the island of the Komodo dragons and walk amongst them (at a cautious distance of course!). How many people can say that they have seen these fierce Jurassic creatures up close? Can you picture the exotic beauty of it all?

6 Set a focus and develop support
Topic sentence Details Concluding sentence Concluding Sentence can… 1. Synthesize paragraph (draw a conclusion): We’ll encounter so many species that we could never see in the Bahamas…. 2. Transition to the next topic: Although the trip has many appeals, there may be some concerns to address. And just think of the unique wonders of the Indian Ocean. We’ll sail from one dive site to another, exploring the amazing creatures of the deep. We’ll swim amongst dolphins, tuna, manta rays, and other pelagic beauties. We follow the sharks and watch them in action— the black tips, the white tips, the hammerheads, and the whale sharks. At night, we’ll dive under the Indonesian moon, looking for blue-ringed octopus and other exotic night creatures. The reefs are teeming with diverse life in Komodo. We’ll encounter so many species that we could never see in the Bahamas or the Caribbean.

7 Counterargument: refute!
I know that you have concerns about this trip. For one, travelling to Indonesia is expensive. But consider the priceless memories that we will gather together at the other end of the world. Also, our children are grown and independent, so now is our time to splurge, to reward ourselves for a job well done. What a perfect reward trip this would be! Perhaps, in addition to the expense, you are worried about me and my risk of decompression sickness. This is a valid concern, but I can assure you that I will be a cautious diver in both number and depth. And to honest, some risks are just worth taking. I hope you’ll agree. Present opposing claims Rebuttal

8 Conclusion: restate , synthesize ideas, final thought
So let’s do it! Let’s journey to the other side of the world and bring back some wonderful memories. You will love the Balinese art, food, and culture. And remember the dragons—they will make the lizards of Galapagos look like poodles. Last but not least—think about the Indian Ocean and its many riches. I know there is risk and expense with this dive trip, but life is too short. Let’s live! Love, Mrs. Fava Restate claim (thesis) Synthesize main points Final thought

10 Mini-lesson: make sure your details are distinct and support your reason.
What is wrong with these details? Cats are better pets than dogs because: Cats are independent. don’t need to be walked several times a day. use the litter box so you don’t have to rush home to walk them. enjoy alone time and don’t require as much interaction. Details “a” and “b” are too similar.

11 What wrong with these details?
Cats are better pets than dogs because: Cats cost less. they consume less food. their vet visits are cheaper. they’re not noisy like barking dogs. Detail “c” is off topic or irrelevant. ©Mauri Fava 2013

12 Mini-lesson: Rebuttal
What’s wrong with the opposing point statement below? III. Dogs are better than cats because they are more loyal, fun, and affectionate. III. Some people say that dogs are more loyal, fun, and affectionate than cats. I disagree. Use transitions to show you are now presenting the opposing view. ©Mauri Fava 2013

13 Refute! While some people believe that dogs are man’s best friend, I think that cats have a quiet sort of loyalty. Although our canine friends love to play fetch and other games, cats can be equally playful with a ball of string. While dogs lick your face to show their love, cats nestle in your lap and will also give you a few affectionate licks. ©Mauri Fava 2013

14 What’s wrong with these opposing view details?
Dogs are man’s best friend and will defend you with their lives. Our canine friends love to play fetch and other games. They lick your face to show their love of you. No rebuttal is provided!!! You’re scoring one for the other team! ©Mauri Fava 2013
