Okay, let’s start the game. Remember, this team has twelve (12) players. This is the home team line up, you will be working with the home team card only for this presentation…okay lets get started… As you progress through this presentation, ask yourself how much easier, as it pertains to mandatory play, the same substitutions would be if the team had thirteen (13) or more players?

During the top of the first inning, after one out, Mark, the manager, noticed that his pitcher was struggling so he had a visit at the mound (mark your card). After two outs he went out and visited him again to calm him down (mark your card). The top of the first inning ended. Compare your card with the next slide.

1 1 25

During the bottom of the first (1) inning while on offense, Mark requested an offensive time out. (mark your card) Compare with the card on the next slide.

1 1 1 27

Also in the bottom of the first (1) inning with two (2) outs, Mark made the following changes.
In the sixth batting position he entered number # 9 Frese for number # 11 Shiu, and moved Frese to defensive position two (2). (mark your card) Debelak moved to position six (6)(mark your card). Can Mark make this change, Shiu hasn’t met mandatory play and had his turn at bat?

Yes, a starter may be removed before meeting his/her mandatory play
Yes, a starter may be removed before meeting his/her mandatory play. However, the starter cannot be re-entered prior to his/her substitute completing their mandatory play requirements. If a starter is removed prior to having completed their required consecutive defensive outs, when they’re re-entered, they must complete their consecutive defensive outs requirement before the substitute can re-enter, even if they have completed a portion of their mandatory play.

Enter the inning top or bottom in the top of the column

Frese 2/10/09 5PM Hometown When a substitute comes into the game, draw a line through their number and name 1 Enter the inning top or bottom in the top of the column 1 1 1

Mark Bernstein 2 C. Rutz 5 1 C. Parker 4 10 F. McKeown 9 12 M. Debelak B. Carter 3 11 G. Shiu 6 13 D. Williams 8 7 W. Hill P. Ryan 14 L. Batterman D. Perret J. Frese 2/10/09 5PM Hometown When a starter comes out of the game, draw a line through the name and defensive position number 1 Insert the substitutions’ number, the number of outs and position number 9 2 2 1 1 1

Input the number of outs and the new position
Mark Bernstein 2 C. Rutz 5 1 C. Parker 4 10 F. McKeown 9 12 M. Debelak B. Carter 3 11 G. Shiu 6 13 D. Williams 8 7 W. Hill P. Ryan 14 L. Batterman D. Perret J. Frese 2/10/09 5PM Hometown When a players defensive position is changed, draw a line through the old position 1 2 6 Input the number of outs and the new position 9 2 2 1 1 1

Remember, because Shiu did not complete the required six (6) consecutive defensive outs to satisfy mandatory play, when he re-enters he must play six consecutive defensive outs or there will be a mandatory play violation. Also, the “at bat” for the starter is not tied to the consecutive outs and can happen any time during the game. The mandatory play requirement would be different if the team had thirteen (13) or more players.

With one out in the top of the second (2), Mark called time to talk to his pitcher again. At the same time, he made another change. In the seventh position in the order, #5 Batterman entered for #13 Williams in the same defensive position. (mark your card). Compare your card with the next slide. NOTE: Don’t forget to use a new column.

2 1 2 6 9 2 2 5 1 8 1 1 1 1 35

Be very careful when making changes, be sure to indicate the number of outs at the time of the change. It makes a huge difference in mandatory play and when players can legally re-enter. Don’t ever assume they have their consecutive outs to meet mandatory play, if you’re not sure if a player had their at-bat ask the score keeper.

In the bottom of the fourth (4) inning with no (0) outs, in position (2) in the order, number # 14 Perret is entered for number #1 Parker in the same defensive position. (mark your card) Is this a legal substitution? Yes, Offensive substitutions are legal as long as they are made when the player is at-bat or on base only. See how you did, go to the next slide.

2 1 4 14 4 2 6 9 2 2 5 1 8 1 1 1 1 38

In the top of the fifth (5) inning with no outs, Marks pitchers’ arm was hurting, he made a visit to his pitcher. He had to pull him but had no eligible subs. By rule, the other teams manager picked #1 Parker to enter the game in position 9 for Ryan. This is legal under tournament rule (a) He also re-entered #11 Shiu same order and position (mark your card). HINT: Cross out the visits to the previous pitcher to keep an accurate count on visits

2 5 1 4 14 4 2 6 9 11 2 2 2 5 1 8 1 1 1 1 1 1 40

In the top of the fifth, Mark’s pitcher was struggling so he made two trips to calm him down. His pitcher didn’t calm down but got out of the inning anyway, (mark your card). Check your card with the card on the next slide.

2 4 5 1 14 4 2 6 9 11 2 2 2 5 1 8 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 42

In the top of the fifth with one (1) out, Mark re-entered #13 Williams in position seven (7) in the batting order. Question, will Williams meet mandatory play? There is one (1) out when this change was made?

2 1 4 5 5 14 4 2 6 9 11 2 2 2 5 13 1 8 1 8 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 44

The answer is no. This is a legal substitution but be aware there could be a protest for a mandatory play violation when the game ends

In the bottom of the fifth Mark put #9 Frese in as a SPR (special pinch runner) to run for #13 Williams. HINT: Put a circle on the number of the runner being run for, that runner can only be run for once and by circling the number allows you to quickly tell if they try and run for him again. (Mark your card).

2 5 5 1 4 14 1 2 4 1 4 2 6 9 11 2 2 2 2 5 13 1 8 1 8 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 47

With one (1) out in the bottom of the of the sixth, Mark called time and entered #3 Ryan in the game to bat for #9 Frese.

2 1 4 5 5 6 14 1 1 4 1 4 2 6 9 11 2 2 2 2 5 13 1 8 1 8 9 3 1 A B 1 1 1 1 1 1 49

Is this legal? If Ryan bats for Frese can Frese go back to the mound if the game goes to extra innings? This is legal, as long as both players have met mandatory play the pitcher of record can be bat for once per game. Substitution/Re-entry tournament rule #10 Page T -17 Note 2:

A player who has met the mandatory play requirements, and is a pitcher at the time she/he is removed, may be removed for a substitute batter and re-enter the game as a pitcher once, provided the pitcher was not physically replaced on the mound. You should mark your card, to remind you, and ask the manager if the pitcher will re-enter in the next inning as a pitcher. In this case we put A/B (at bat) for our example.

2 1 4 5 5 6 14 1 1 4 1 4 2 6 9 11 2 2 2 2 5 13 1 8 1 8 9 3 1 A B 1 1 1 1 1 1 52

When a starter has re-entered the game, and has met mandatory play, draw a curved line through their name. This will alert you that the starter and substitute will have free substitution. Note that Ryan #3 has met mandatory play. Once the starter re-enters and has met mandatory play, there is free substitution between the starter and his/her substitute(s) 2 1 4 5 5 6 14 1 1 4 1 4 2 6 9 11 2 2 2 2 5 13 1 8 1 8 9 3 1 A B 1 1 1 1 1 1 53

The game ended at the end of 6 innings
The game ended at the end of 6 innings. Did everyone satisfy mandatory play? Check your card and make sure. The line-up card is the official record of the game. Don’t throw your card away until the next day or the end of the tournament. You never know when your card might be used to dispute a mandatory play or other violations in a game.

Parker and Williams did not
Parker and Williams did not. They still had to get one more consecutive out. You can advise the scorekeeper or tournament director after the game ends, whether the team wins or losses. 2 1 4 5 5 6 14 1 1 4 1 4 2 6 9 11 2 2 2 2 5 13 1 8 1 8 9 3 1 A B 1 1 1 1 1 1 55

Managers usually wait until the bottom of the third or top of the forth inning to begin their substitutions. Always be aware of the number of players on the roster and the mandatory play requirements for both teams. You should always try to prevent protest situations. Make sure you fully understand the substitution and mandatory play requirements.

CONGRATULATIONS! Remember this card is for you to look back on the game and know what and when took place. You can use the card and the boxes anyway you want, as long as you can explain what happened!
