2 Get out you hw from the last two nights and review
Get out you hw from the last two nights and review! Then make a pile and start the warm up: In the last section we looked at venn diagrams and two-way tables In this section were going to look at the probability of disjoint and overlapping events. Please get up and ask every person in the class where they fit here!

3

4 Per 0 Example

5 A Compound Event is the union or intersection of two events
You consider ALL the outcomes for either of the two events A and B Two events overlap if they have 1 or more outcomes in common. Two events are disjoint (aka Mutually Exclusive) if they have no outcomes in common. An Intersection of A and B happens when you consider only the outcomes shared by both A and B Was our activity a compound event?

6 BECAUSE the P(A and B) = 0!

7 EX 1 A card is randomly selected from a standard deck of 52 cards. What is the probability that it is a 10 OR a face card? EX 2 A card is randomly selected from a standard deck of 52 cards. What is the probability that it is a face card OR a spade? *a 10 canNOT be a face card *a face card CAN be a spade

8 Error Analysis: Describe and Correct the error in finding the probability of randomly drawing a card from a standard deck of 52 cards.

9 Derive! If the formula for P(A or B) for any two events is P(A or B) = P(A) + P(B) – P(A and B) What is the formula for P(A and B)?

10 EX 3 Out of 200 students in a senior class, 113 students are either on varsity athletics OR on the honor roll. There are 74 seniors who are varsity athletes and 51 seniors who are honor roll. What is the probability that a randomly selected senior is both a varsity athlete and on the honor roll? In summary, we are given the following pieces of information: P(A) = P(B) = P(A or B) = Substitute into the formula P(A and B) = P(A) + P(B) - P(A or B) 74 200 51 200

11 You Try! You and your best friend are among several candidates running for class president. You estimate that there is 45% chance you will win and a 25% chance that your best friend will win. What is the probability that either you OR your best friend wins the election? You are performing an experiment to determine how well plants grow under different light sources. Out of the 30 plants in the experiment, 12 receive visible light, 15 receive ultraviolet light, and 6 receive both kinds of light. What is the probability that a plant in the experiment receives either visible light OR ultraviolet light?

12 Retake the WRITTEN portion of the Ch 9 Test
Total is out of /25 What ever you get on this next version will be your score (better or worse.) If you got above a 18, your retake date is 5/9 at lunch If you got between a 10-17, your retake date is 5/10 at lunch If you got between a 9 or below, your retake date is 5/11 at lunch Between then and now, complete the retake practice worksheet, front and back. In order to take the retake, you must show me that. CHECK YOU ANSWERS ONLINE. Come in MONDAY 5/8 at lunch if you have questions
