2 Figure 1 Model for Coordinated Regulation of Meiosis-Specific Splicing in Budding Yeast and Titration of the Splicing Machinery by Pre-mRNAs of Ribosomal Protein Genes Under conditions of vegetative growth, the abundant and intron-rich ribosomal protein genes (RPGs) titrate away the available spliceosomes and therefore limit splicing of other transcripts. Upon induction of meiosis, RPGs are repressed. Consequently, spliceosomal components are more available to associate with other transcripts, enhancing splicing of both meiosis-specific genes as well as other non-RPGs. Similar effects on non-RPGs are observed upon inhibition of RPG expression by treatment with rapamycin or by genetic depletion of transcription factor IFH1, which is important for the transcription of RPGs.
