1 Kingdom Protista

2 Objective 25: I can describe protists
Protists are: Eukaryotic – they contain a nucleus Can be plant like, animal like, or fungus like Live in wet or moist environments If you look at a drop of pond water under a microscope, all the "little creatures" you see swimming around are protists.

3 Objective 26: I can describe plant-like protists
Contain chloroplasts are autotrophs –they make their own food. Algae – is the base of the food chain for MANY animals, and it provides more than half of the world’s oxygen supply Examples: Red, Green or Brown Algae, Euglenas, Diatoms

4 Objective 27: I can describe animal like protists
Animal-like protists: Protozoans Heterotrophs – can not make their own food digest their food in vacuoles Protozoans are grouped according to how they move The word protozoa means "little animal." They are so named because many species behave like tiny animals—specifically, they hunt and gather other microbes as food.

5 3 groups of Animal Like Protists:
Amoebae which move by the use of pseudopodia (false feet) engulfing food as they go. Flagellates generally the smallest of the protozoa have one or several long, whip-like projections called flagella poking out of their cells. Flagellates use their flagella to move.

6 Ciliates: covered with hair-like projections called cilia and they eat the other two types of protozoa as well as bacteria. Ciliates are found in every aquatic habitat.

7 Objective 28: I can describe fungus-like protists:
Are heterotrophs (can NOT produce their own food) Sporozoa – reproduce with spores Many have flagella and are able to move at some point in their lives. Examples: water molds, slime molds, downy molds

8 Objective 29: I can describe special Protists:
Euglenas: are both plant-like and animal-like. Euglena are autotrophs since they make food from sunlight and Heterotrophs since they ingest food from surrounding water.

9 A Volvox is a hollow ball composed of hundreds of flagellated cells in a single layer.
