Reference case 1 ESL Shipping:
MS VIIKKI Name , Date May 4, 2019

Background Joint project with WE Tech Solutions for a permanent magnet shaft generator and WE Drive™ MS Viikki – the world’s first LNG-fueled bulk carrier Owned by Finnish-based ESL Shipping Year built: 2018 Shipyard: Sinotrans & CSC, Jinling Shipyard, China Cargo capacity: > 33,000 m3

Challenge Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Bothnia have significant winter ice coverage, and protected as a sulfur emission control area (SECA) Sailing in ice conditions is considered to be the most demanding – ice can cause rapid changes in the main engine load The propulsion units need to be flexible, responsive and deliver optimal power per unit, while meeting the most stringent environmental criteria

Solution The solution is built around WE Tech’s variable frequency drive technology WE Drive™ and The Switch PMM 1000 direct-drive permanent magnet shaft generator Mechanical energy from the propeller shaft is captured and converted to green electrical energy for the vessel The PMM generates energy for vessel systems, allowing less waste and increased efficiency The solution offers different operational modes, such as Power Take In (PTI) according to needs

Results MS Viikki – the world’s most environmentally friendly bulk carrier Designed in accordance with EEDI The solution allows MS Viikki to achieve Ice Class 1A and cut fuel consumption by 50% since 2006 ESL Shipping gains improved profitability and competitiveness Leaving the Chinese yard, MS Viikki made its way to Finland via the Northeast Passage. This shortened the journey by 3 weeks, compared to routing via the Panama Canal, and cut emissions by 40% The demanding conditions of rough seas – not an issue. May 4, 2019
