9
In Between Growth * Academic * Social * Personal
10
In Between Stress and Stressors * Academic * Social * Personal
11
Stress We have seen a significant increase in the number of students who are exhibiting significant signs of stress and anxiety. #1 Issue: Academics (external and internally imposed)
12
Academics “It Counts” (and we all know what they mean by that)
Increased: coursework parent expectations personal expectations teacher expectations awareness of competition among peers
13
Looking Ahead BIG issue. * Will I get into College?
Students begin thinking about the BIG issue. * Will I get into College? * Will I get in to a “good” college?
14
*The Big Answer * Yes (Don’t you feel better?)
15
Social/Emotional Issues
* Balancing activities * Maintaining friendships * Shifting friendships * Making the team/getting the part * Bullying….less of but still an issue. * Social Networks(Instagram, Snap-chat, Twitter, Face Book) * Feeling connected/Feeling left out * Peer Pressure-----Very Real Issue of alcohol and drugs
16
Personal Issues * Relationships (family and friends) * Family issues
* Self-esteem * Self-awareness * Self-advocacy
17
* Please focus on the here and now.
Class of 2022 Our Recommendations: * Please focus on the here and now. * Please don’t define your child or allow them to define themselves by their grades alone. * Encourage your child to begin identifying one or two serious interests and look for opportunities to develop them. * Looking and thinking ahead, please think broadly about post-secondary opportunities that lie ahead for your children. There are so many of them.
18
For Now: Get Off to a Good Start
Being organized: The Planner Understanding school policies - attendance - code of conduct - academic integrity Understanding individual teacher policies - homework - grading Managing and balancing personal time
19
Parent Role How you can help: - Maintain/establish policies at
home regarding homework, use of the computer, phone, games, etc. - Help with organizational skills - Monitor time management skills - Be observant, be aware of the signs of stress - Help them develop “coping” skills (enclosed article) - Resist the temptation to solve every issue - Trust your instincts if you think something is wrong - Reach out….to us!
20
Stay Connected Schedule Appointments with your child:
- Set aside an agreed upon time to catch up and/or discuss academic progress/activities - Create an agenda - Expect input
21
The Benefits Students are trying to be more independent. This approach might allow them to feel they have “room” to develop. Expecting input allows the student to know that he/she is responsible for his/her behavior, actions, etc. Can prevent student perception of the “my parents are always nagging me” syndrome
22
Class of 2022 * 258 students * 258 different pathways through high school and beyond. It is most important that we all recognize and support each student’s individuality and promise.
