Section A: Reading 40 marks 1 hour Section B: Writing 40 marks 45 minutes General feedback: You MUST read each source twice and add annotations/brief summaries of sections before approaching the questions – spend 10 minutes on this – it is time well spent! You need to ensure you are writing for the entire exam – do not waste time. You have one shot to succeed and I promise you, you will regret not putting everything into these exams later in life if you choose that. You MUST check and edit work – you will make mistakes, don’t let these lose you marks. Keep an eye on time – ensure you have enough time for the bigger questions, particularly Q5. Marking this exam has highlighted where we need to focus over the coming weeks: Q2, Q4, Q5. What do you need to remember for the exam? Section A: Reading 40 marks 1 hour Section B: Writing 40 marks 45 minutes We are going to go through the exam paper, along with what you should have written. I have not prepared a crib sheet but instead will project it here so you need to make notes as we go along! You will need a different coloured pen to the one you used in the exam (it doesn’t matter what the colour is). You will need to add to your response to improve it, which will become invaluable for your revision. What do you need to remember for the exam? Section A: Reading 40 marks 1 hour Section B: Writing 40 marks 45 minutes Source A is taken from Morning Glass, the autobiography of professional surfer Mike Doyle. In this extract, he describes his introduction to the world of surfing at the beach near his home in California in the 1950s. In 1875, the British explorer Isabella Bird travelled to Hawaii, an island in the Pacific Ocean. Source B is an extract from a letter she wrote to her sister back in England, describing a visit to the Hawaiian town of Hilo. At that time in Britain surfing, or ‘surf-bathing’, was a completely unknown sport. How many of you read the source and annotated by the side what each paragraph was about? How about the mood or tone? What do you need to remember for the exam? Paper 2 Question 2 Write a summary of the content between the two texts 8 marks minutes Language paper 2 feedback and next steps 2. You need to refer to Source A and Source B for this question: Both sources describe the types of board used for surfing. Use details from both sources to write a summary of what you understand about the different boards used by the surfers. TIPS: Not long enough – aim for 2 SEICSEI paragraphs! You need to analyse one source at a time then CONNECT/COMPARE them. Make clear links between sources (e.g. size, weight) - you must use comparatives THROUGHOUT (likewise, similarly, both…) ONLY answer the question – do not talk about anything other than the boards (not Mike’s opinion on boards or people riding them!) HUGE LACK OF INFERENCE – you must suggest what the source tells us – We can infer from this… This suggests/implies… Positives All using points and most supporting with evidence Impressive responses: Jess Jacob Fraser Aaliyah Ben D Statement: In source A we read about…… Evidence: We see this when it says “…………” Inference: This could mean……… Comparative: However, Statement: in source B we read about…… Inference: This could mean………. Paper 2 Question 2 Write a summary of the content between the two texts 8 marks 10 minutes Language paper 2 feedback and next steps Although the surfboards appear outwardly similar, the Hawaiian boards are no more sophisticated than a primitively shaped ‘plank of wood’ cut from the ‘native breadfruit tree,’ whereas some of the Californian boards use new ‘lighter’ materials such as ‘balsa wood.’ suggesting the Americans are keen to develop their boards for a smoother performance. There is a sense of innovation in the way the surfers regard their boards, as the mahogany paddle-board is dismissed as ‘old-fashioned’ and ‘unbelievably awkward.’ The Hawaiians use natural resources to create ‘hand-carved’ surfboards in the same traditional way as they would make ‘a coffin lid’ which suggests that their boards are an important part of their cultural way of life, not just a fashion accessory COMPARATIVES Statement: In source A we read about…… Evidence: We see this when it says “…………” Inference: This could mean……… Statement: However, in source B we read about…… Inference: This could mean………. Paper 2 Question 3 How has the writer used language to describe… 12 marks 12 minutes Language paper 2 feedback and next steps 3. You now need to refer only to Source B from lines How does the writer use language to describe the surfers and the sea? TIPS Take from given lines ONLY or no marks Aim for 3 x SEI. Use “ ” around all words taken from text. Name word classes (adjective, adverb) or use ‘lexical choice’ Be specific about techniques – not just ‘uses language’ You MUST discuss effect/impact on reader/line/narrative – this does not have to be makes the reader feel but use enhances, highlights, suggests, emphasises… NEVER USE ‘this makes the reader want to read on’ – creates vivid imagery for the reader or causes intrigue For top marks – give multiple interpretations – think outside the box! Positives Some great responses and strong close analysis! Ben D Jacob Sophie Fraser Jess Kia Elise Kyle E Laura Phoebe Aaliyah Statement: The extract uses ……….. Paper 2 Question 3 How has the writer used language to describe… 12 marks 12 minutes Language paper 2 feedback and next steps So they rode in majestically, always just ahead of the breaker, carried shorewards by its mighty impulse at the rate of forty miles an hour, as the more daring riders knelt and even stood on their surf-boards, waving their arms and uttering exultant cries. They were always apparently on the verge of engulfment by the fierce breaker whose towering white crest was ever above and just behind them, but just as one expected to see them dashed to pieces, they either waded quietly ashore, or sliding off their boards, dived under the surf, and were next seen far out at sea, as a number of heads bobbing about like corks in smooth water, preparing for fresh exploits. For this question, you need to refer to the whole of Source A together with the whole of Source B. Compare how the writers convey their different perspectives on surfing. Tips Answer question – don’t tell me about surfers – always about VIEWPOINT/PERSPECTIVE and HOW this is shown (techniques, tone, language etc.) Analyse one source then move onto the next fluently using comparatives – don’t just write a page about one then a page about the other! SEICSEI x2/3 – weave comparison through 2nd half Use comparatives THROUGHOUT – make it obvious Repeat appropriate parts from Q2 but add close analysis LINKS – idea/techniques – Both writers use… Both think/feel… Positives Sophie Jess Elise Fraser CJ Ben D Phoebe Statement: In source A, the attitude towards question focus is……. Paper 2 Question 4 Compare the viewpoints 16 marks 20 minutes Language paper 2 feedback and next steps Both writers admire the surfing, but whereas in Source B, Bird appreciates the surfing display as a spectator from afar, Doyle in Source A is ‘dazzled’ and desperate to take part, aspiring to become one of them. Bird uses a repetitive pattern to suggest she sees the world of surfing as a paradise of endless bliss: ‘so blue… so soft … so sweet,’ the alliteration adding to the slow, soothing ‘serene’ tone she creates. Doyle, however, is at home, not a tourist, and idolises the surfers, metaphorically describing them as ‘bronzed gods,’ viewing them as supernatural beings, tanned and confident. Having established his hopes at the start, Doyle shows the progress of his dream as the text develops, like a wave, with his first attempt at surfing as the climax or crest, and ending with the humorous image of himself ‘spread-eagled’ on the shore in the final line, echoing structurally his first experience of surfing. Statement: In source A, the attitude towards question focus is……. Section B: Writing 40 marks 45 minutes 5. ‘All sport should be fun, fair and open to everyone. These days, sport seems to be more about money, corruption and winning at any cost.’ Write an article for a newspaper in which you explain your point of view no this statement. TIPS: Those who planned achieved the most marks – take time to do this! Include: paragraph plan, checklist of techniques/structural features, linked opening and closing Range of punctuation THROUGHOUT : ; ( ) – Structural features – repetition, fragments, one line paragraphs, parallel syntax, short sentences for impact Need more long, complex sentences for detail Aim for 1 ½ pages Techniques/methods are not being used consistently – do things on purpose for specific effects Don’t use ‘my view on this statement’ or ‘I agree with this statement’ – it is a newspaper article you are writing! A headline is enough to show it is an article, don’t use an image box. If you use a headline/date, write these not just ‘headline’/’date’ Wider variety of sentences – de:de, if, if, if, then etc. You must DEVELOP your argument not just make random unlinked points – use connectives.
