Test review-evolution

Theory of evolution that states evolution has been taking place for millions of years and continues in living things. Individuals better suited to their environment, due to adaptations, are able to survive and reproduce most successfully

The theory of evolution that states organisms acquire certain traits over their lifetime. These acquired traits are then passed on to their offspring. (giraffe stretching his neck, it gets longer, offspring have longer necks)

any difference between cells, individual organisms, or groups of organisms of any species caused either by genetic differences or by the effect of environmental factors on the expression of the genetic potentials ( may be shown in physical appearance, metabolism, fertility, mode of reproduction, behaviour, learning and mental ability, and other obvious or measurable characters.)

Protective coloring or another feature that conceals an animal and enables it to blend into its surroundings.

Body parts that are similar in origin and structure

A well supported, testable explanation of phenomena that have occurred in the natural world

Preserved remains of plants or animals that died long ago

Evolution characterized by long periods of stability in the characteristics of an organism and short periods of rapid change during which new forms appear Theory of evolution that states evolution has been taking place for millions of years and continues in living things. Individuals better suited to their environment, due to adaptations, are able to survive and reproduce most successfully

A group of organisms that share similar characteristics and can reproduce among themselves

Individuals better suited to their environment (due to adaptations that allow them to be fit and therefore survive and reproduce) are chosen by nature and pass on their traits. Aka survival of the fittest.

The theory that modern organism have descended from ancient organisms (change over time)

Any inherited characteristic that increases an organisms chance of survival (for example, a curled shell rather than a straight one)

The struggle for existence; A symbiotic relationship between or among living things for resources, such as food, space, shelter, mate, ecological status, etc

One of the main ways that new species is formed is by becoming separated from the rest of the species—think about the Galapagos islands!!

Species create more offspring than can possibly survive
Species create more offspring than can possibly survive. This is overproduction, one of Darwin’s ideas on evolution

Darwin believed that a small group of organisms came to the Galapagos from the South American mainland and then formed new species due to isolation-ex..cormorants

Scientists have found that the Galapagos finches have different beaks, specific for the food that they eat
