Mark a point. Ask children to write on their whiteboards the number they think you have marked. Discuss, modelling marking in the 50 at halfway to help. Repeat as whole class and then children play in pairs, challenging each other to guess what numbers they have marked. Year 3

Each child has cards 0–9 in order. Begin with children all showing 0s. Say that we will first count in 1s. Slowly count while the card holders adjust their cards accordingly. Then count in steps of 10, 100 or 5. Year 3

Children can have their own clock to use for support, if needed. Ask a child to show the jumps of 5 minutes as you count them together. Set the clock to 12 o’clock and repeat the activity, this time saying the hour as well: 12:05, 12:10, 12:15 … cross 1 o’clock and keep going until half past 1. Repeat, this time saying five past twelve, ten past twelve, etc. Year 3

What is the best digit to start with? What is the largest odd 3-digit number that can be made using digits 0 to 9? Each digit can only be used once. What must the number end in? Careful not use a digit twice! Adele says that the answer must be 987. Is she right? Who can explain why? Year 3

A. The largest even 3-digit number. This is a trial and improvement activity, move around digits until you have found an answer that meets all the criteria. What are some of the criteria for each target number. Year 3

32 Whole class investigation
Day 5: Understand place value in 3-digit numbers. Whole class investigation Work in pairs … Using digits 0 to 9 (only use a digit once in a number), make 3-digit numbers as follows: the largest even number; the smallest multiple of 5; the number closest to 800. Challenge Think of your own rules to make a number. Check it, then add it to the list on the board for others to try. Today would be a great day to do Hamilton’s recommended investigation - Counter Place Value - which you can find in this unit’s IN-DEPTH INVESTIGATION box on Hamilton’s website. Today’s GROUP ACTIVITY is also a whole class investigation. Children can work in mixed-ability pairs but check WT have understood the various vocabulary. Children can also use digit cards to make the numbers and play around with the digits. Stop children at intervals to take their ideas and note some of these on the board. Model experimenting with the digits, rather than just staying with the first number they come up with. Children share their solutions and discuss whether there is more than one possible set of answers. Year 3
